Ok, fairly quick question:

I notice when you delete songs from the iTunes library, they get deleted from the iPod the next time you plug it in. Now, my dad wants to wipe our whole system clean, fresh installs, etc. This means losing all of the music on here, so my question is this: if I plug in my iPod when there's no music on the computer (and therefore none in iTunes), will I lose all of the songs on my iPod?

What if you set your iPod to act as a hard drive, and plugged it in without installing iTunes? You could copy all of your songs over, install iTunes and them add them to the library.

I don't have an iPod though, but I think it would work.

It's the "auto-update" feature, for people who aren't the most technologically literate -- you set iTunes to read from a certain playlist and modify its library to keep in sync with it. Quite easy to turn this off, but make sure you eject your iPod before you disconnnect it if you decide to go the manual route.

Yes, because we all know it's better to go out and buy something else and bash Apple when we can't figure out how to make something work.

Thanks for all of your help, but I just have one more question: I turned auto-sync off, so which option do I use to transfer songs from my iPod to the computer? I found one called "Consolidate library", is that it?

Again, thank you for all of the useful replies.
2004-12-13, 3:54 AM #14
I may be mistaken, but I reckon you need something third party to do that....

My mate nicky'll know - if you post that in the tech forum at www.whopissedyouoff.com it'll get answered

:)

Enable Hard Disk use, then you can browse it in Windows Explorer as if it were a hard drive, I believe there's also a program out there called CopyPod that will let you do it too. Consolidate Library will move all your music to the iTunes folder and make it all neat and organized. I don't use that because I organize it myself. However, it is useful when you're moving all your music to another HD.

You should be able to click-and-drag in iTunes.

To transfer from his iPod to his computer? I don't think it allows that, or else iPod P2Ping would be insane.

Yeah, that's why I think you need something third party - I heard copypod mentioned up there somewhere...

I dont have my materials here since I'm at home, but go here and try searching for your issue

http://search.info.apple.com/

Knowledge base for customers provides you with various answers to your questions. Just run a search.

And for the third-party advice, I suggest no. Apple doesn't support any third party devices, strictly Apple products. When and if you attempt to load or attach a third party device, if something goes wrong, you're screwed. We don't support it.

Question 5: I have a computer at home and one at work. Can I update my iPod music collection from more than one computer?
Answer: Yes. When you first connect iPod to your computer, iPod recognizes that computer as its "home" computer. Each time you connect, iPod automatically downloads the music library stored on it. When you connect iPod to a different computer, iPod asks for permission before synchronizing with this music library. If you choose Auto-sync, iPod recognizes the second computer as its home computer and breaks the link with the original computer. If you do not choose Auto-sync, iPod switches to manual update mode, allowing you to selectively drag songs, albums, or playlists from the second computer to your iPod.

Synchronization occurs only in one direction, from your computer to your iPod. This means you cannot transfer music, automatically or manually, from your iPod to a computer, and you cannot use iPod to copy a music library from one computer to another. But, if you legally are allowed to copy music files, you can configure your iPod as a hard disk to move music files.

so hard-drive is the way to go.

Third party software, but yeah, apple wont like it. I haven't even overridden the european inhibitor chip on mine.

Ok. Auto-sync is off and hard-drive is enabled. I looked around the iPod through Windows Explorer and, apart from the fact that some files have been renamed slightly, everything's there.

So once again, thanks for everyone's help in saving my music :D

Dude, come on. This guy is asking for help with his iPod, and you respond by telling him to get a Nomad?

Not just software. Anything that wasn't bundled with the computer, third party, is not supported. Hardware, Software, Peripherals, anything.
