I know we recently had 200,000 posts and that was quite a milestone. This one's not that major, but still a sign of Massassi's rapidly growing community.

I'm curious though (and this is a question directed toward admins): of the 10,000+ members of Massassi, how many actually regularly post (currently), and how many have post counts over 100(overall, and as far back as the first members)?

I was just interested to see how many people are actively posting on(and maybe viewing) Massassi.

250 people have logged in within the past 24 hours... this seems to be about average. Quite a few of them are lurkers though, people who post very little.

1153 people have a post count of 100 or more.
478 people have a post count of 500 or more.
303 people have a post count of 1000 or more.
156 people have a post count of 2000 or more.
83 people have a post count of 3000 or more.
54 people have a post count of 4000 or more.

The number of people signing up for new accounts on the forums is dwindling though. At our peak, 469 people registered new accounts during May of 2002. Last month, we only had 49 people register new accounts.

Thankyou DSettahr, that was just the kind of information I was looking for. Don't ask me why I obsess over these facts and numbers, but I was curious as to how many of our 10,000 members actually post regularly. It is actually quite a small percentage. I did note, however, that these forums now have 7 people with post counts over 10,000.

I really like the size of Massassi currently, though, it's just big enough so that there are plenty of things to see and talk about, but small enough that you get a real sense of community and know most of the members fairly well. :)

I wonder if there is any way to generate the "true" post count of the entire forums from the individual accounts... even after the posts were pruned, each users post count was not modified, so they should still be accurate.
2004-12-12, 8:13 PM #16
Why does Massassi prune threads, anyway? Surely not every forum does it. In fact, in this thread it was you yourself, DSettahr, that said:

So why do we prune, and why can't we stop? Again, I quote:

Surely other forums wouldn't have gotten to their massive size if this had been their policy. Besides, in the process, you might kill lots of exceedingly helpful editing threads with breakthrough discoveries that could be lost forever...

The old forums were pruned because once the post count reached a certain number, the scripts started to break and the forums became un-usable. The easiest solution was to delete a large amount of the old threads.

The new forums do not have this problem, so there will be no pruning of any kind in the for-seeable future. You've got nothing to worry about.
2004-12-12, 8:16 PM #18
We pruned on UBB because the system couldn't handle high numbers of threads, when we imported everything into these forums we only pruned what actually existed. I don't think we've pruned anything since switching to the new forums.

*sigh of relief*

Thankyou both. :D

I was just wondering one more thing at this point in time. Have you ever noticed that when you try to use the search function, these forums are very picky.

Here are some of the problems I've had:

1) The "Search By Keyword" option refuses to let you search for something under 4 letters (which can be very irritating).

2) Even more irritating than "1" is the "Search By User Name" option, which also has the same "won't work if 4 or less letters" deal (which is a real pain if you're trying to search for "gbk" for example.)

3) The search also refuses to work if you type in "hedge hog" or "hat trick" - even though there are a couple of words in the search, because one of them is under 4 letters, it refuses to co-operate.

4) The search doesn't seem to pick up on a lot of words, even if they've been posted numerous times. [EDIT: I could be wrong on this one, I don't have a conclusive example yet.]

5) This is my major qualm - the search can't access or include any posts since before the new forum switch, so as far as the search engine is concerned, this forum is only a few months old. That makes searching for old articles of interest or imprtance in the Editing Forums a serious pain, and often near to impossible unless you want to spend hours searching manually, or sometimes searching a user's previous posts from their profile (still impractical though).

So, is there any way to fix this? Did you even know these issues existed?

Sorry, but there isnt any way to fix any of those issues without modifying the forum coding itself.
2004-12-12, 9:03 PM #22
Someone should add up all the numbers from the memberlist which has post count too, to see how many posts we really have.
(by add up I mean write a program to do it of course)

Would it be possible to do that without totally screwing up everything?

Well, there is a good reason for the 4 letter limit... it keeps the amount of processing time needed for searches down by a lot. It probably wouldnt be a good idea to lower this limit, since we dont have a lot of processing time for the site. (This becomes very apparent whenever a search is run on the cp, the whole forum slows down alot).

As for the old threads thing, there probably wouldnt be any way to do it that would be easy enough to really be worth the effort.
2004-12-13, 5:53 AM #25
DS: That adding posts idea sounds good, but it will not give us a perfect count.

There is deleted posts, the account bug problem way back when, and probably other problems.

But it would still give a decent idea of the number of posts on these forums.
