Poker Chips

Need a little help from you guys, hopefully. I want to get a Poker Chip Set for my brother for Christmas. I've tried searching Google but there's sets everywhere, and everyone has different weights. I'm looking for regulation weight, clay style poker chips, and it seems every store has their own version of what that is.

Can anyone shed some light on this?

Hoyle's book of rules might have something on that.

If you want regulation you had better be prepared to pay a lot of money... *remembers that JD is uberrich* ... *******.

Who said I was uber-rich? More like my income is not that great, but neither are my necesary expenses. ;(

Anyway, so far the average prices are around $170, way too much for my blood. I'll probably just get him the set we have at Fry's Electronics, it's pretty nice, just not clay, but oh well.

Wow, this is weird. My friend and I were just at target and we picked up a set of the REAL poker chips for only 50 bucks! Then we drove across to Dicks and the exact same set was $150
Think while it's still legal.

Make sure they stack nicely, and make sure you get ALOT of them. You don't NEED clay chips, but they're awesome if you can get your hands on them. Bicycle, Bee, etc all make poker chips that you can buy in sets.

There are some good chip reviews over at this site. If you look around you can learn to handle them like a pro, too

We've been into Texas Hold'Em lately. I bought two "wheels" of composite (plastic) chips and carts from Toys R Us. Each one was 20 bucks. They are thick and nice like the good ones but they aren't clay. Just don't get the really thin ones with the ridges, those bite.

Costco was selling a really nice set of 400 composite chips, two decks of cards, and a rule book in a nice aluminum case for 59.99 I think. My sister's boyfriend bought it and they are really nice to play with. You can't even really tell that they're plastic.

Finally, I was just in costco the other day and they have a new poker chip set that *is* clay. It's 400 pieces for 30 bucks I think. They look really nice but I didn't get a chance to pick them up.

The internet prices seem really high. This is one of those times when it would be really nice to have contacts in Vegas. Because I bet you everything I own that casinos are charged a fraction of a cent per chip whereas all these online stores are charging 70 cents - a buck per chip.

Yeah, I noticed that online poker chips were really expensive for some reason.

I think I'm gonna get a set through Fry's Electronics. I knew we had them, but I didn't know what quality they were. Finally I opened them all up to see. The only two sets that they carry in our software department were total crap. However, we carry a brand in our department called Maverick, and they actually feel and sound really nice. I opened a set and was asking some customers (as they bought memory and processors) if they played poker and asked them about the quality and everyone I asked seemed to like em a lot. They're not clay, but apparently they are clay composite, which from asking customers, can sometimes be better as they won't color run if they get wet, and won't break as easily. The brand could be an offset of Bee, as it has Bee cards in the set. Unfortunatly, we didn't have the 500 set, so I'm gonna buy him two 300 sets. After my discount, they're really cheap compared to online.

very strange. I've been getting ridiculously into poker (Texas Hold 'Em mainly) lately, to the point where I bought some chips last weekend. Really crappy ones, but that was apparently all that was available in the whole of London and I didn't have time to wait for delivery.
I was thinking about asking for a decent set for xmas, but I think I'll just wait until I can choose some myself. (so...when I win the lottery)

Is it a sword or a poker chip?

We should all get together and have a Massassi Texas Hold'Em Tournament on one of the free poker sites. I have an account at pokerroom.com

I'd definitly play. I always hold my own in "live" poker, wonder what it's like to play online. Does it require a credit card anyways?

Online poker sucks cos it's much more of a straight-up game that real-life texas hold-em. Bluffing is virtually non-existant, and whenever you dramatically take your time over a decision everyone just assumes you're lagging.

Still, if we had a tourney you know I'd be in :D

I second this motion, although I only currently play on Jetset.

Yeah, I always assumed this would be the case, poker is so psychological. Plus, my green visor is wasted online!

£5 on ebay! I had to pay an extra couple of quid for mine because I needed it the next day, but it was well worth it to have it at my mate's bday party. The world looks cool through green plastic and vodka!
