Madden, only NFL football game for next 5 years

Yes, you heard me right.
This practice should be illegal or something, this year I switched over and brought ESPN NFL 2k5 and I am currently enjoying it very much. No, this series can no longer continue. Even worse, without the competition, the Madden franchise will have a monopoly on all football games.

IT's a hell of a business deal, but it takes away competition, which drives inovation in games like this. I've got a feeling Madden is going to stagnate over the next few years. It's a shame because NFL2k5 was better than Madden.

also, those games aren't played much outside the U.S.

EA is pure evil...

This makes EA have no real motive to make the game any better than 2k5.......this sucks so much

I don't understand why you would simulate an activity on a PC when you could be doing it in real life.

So you're an NFL caliber football player? Didn't think so.

That sucks. I bought my Dad a copy of ESPN NFL 2k5 for his birthday, and he has told me time and again how much fun he has playing it. I honestly hope there's a lawsuit brought forth to appeal this, but I don't know if there's much ground for opponents to stand on. Brand-exclusive licensing is nothing new to pro sports. This time it's different from some other things like beverages, where a consumer still has a choice -- this leaves no alternative whatsoever for consoles, and very little breathing room for PC games.

Smart move for EA. That'll bring in all the money. Anywho I know my friends wont mind. That's all the guys were playing. Lee first off, loves football and plays Madden 24-7, he had me pick a team for him to play with and I chose Greenbay (my sisters Fiance's fav. team). Anywho, the guys get pretty intense about that game, Jay pulled some sneaky shots and let Mike get penalties while he was on the phone. Mike was so pissed off, that after a while he just quit playing. It bothered him that bad. anyways i'm trying to get some games for xmas we will see what happens. If not I guess once I get my job with universal i'll have to pick it up for myself

what is so different about these new games that they release a new one each year? Are there really that many changes to justify a yearly version?

I agree with what was said about EA. IMO, EA is what happens when you take the soul out of video game making.

yes... updated rosters, features, graphics, gameplay... you name it.

They always tweak the franchise settings to improve how you manage your team during the week, how you manage your finaces, you name it. They also are constantly working on improving the AI

This really pisses me off. Madden 2005 was the exact same as 2004: unrealistic and boring. Unless something drastic happens, EA just screwed over all the people (like me) who like a realistic football video game.

Last time I heard, monopolies were illegal. Someone should tell EA and the NFL that.

hmm...
It I were the NFL 2k5 folks, I would spend the next 5 years developing the best, most efficient & smartest engine & AI possible. so as soon as that contract runs out, you can show just how much EA's games suck by comparison.

But then if you ended up w/o the license then I guess you'd be SOL.

Yeah, monopolies=evil.
EA is starting to look like microsquish.

As long as they keep making racing games I care not.

The NFS series is decent at best... the last 3 iterations of it have had serious problems... and their nascar games are horrible when compared to the ones that Sierra and Papyrus used to make...

Exaclty, why? anyway i think that madden is the better nfl game.
I know that you believe you understand what you think I said, but I'm not sure you realize that what you heard is not what I meant.

1. Because I can't just go out and coach an NFL team whenever I feel like it in real life.
2. Because it's really cold outside.
3. Because it's not much fun playing actual football with just two people.

This isn't really a monopoly. This is a single product, its not an entire industry. There are plenty of other ways for other video game manufacturers to make money.

Nothing is going to stop other companies from making football games. They just won't get to use the NFL name or the real players names. If Sega makes a 2k6 footbal game, it will be just as good or better than Madden and people who are playing NFL 2k5 will buy it.

the problem is the NASCAR Racing series ended with 2003... so that basically leaves people with that game or going with a very inferior EA game

and the last 3 NFS games have been alright... sure HP2 wasn't anything special... just the same old NFS with a graphics update... and the NFSU games... well we all know what's going on here... and to be perfectly honest you only really need one of the 2

Gameplay wise, possibly, but without the NFL license, the game does lose some of its values. I mean, controlling teams and players based off of the real NFL is part of the fun. Fortunately if you're into college football, those games are still made.

Do you think it would be within the law to just call it "Football 2006" and then change all the players names to things like... *attempts to look up NFL players... fails*
Like "John Smith" could be like "Blohn Smith" sorta thing... where you still know who it is?

I don't care either way about any of this since I'm not into Sports games at all. My friend though, has both NFL 2k5 and Madden 2k5. He plays both of them, and I've watched him play. I'd have to say, and he'd agree, that out of the two, Madden is the more entertaining.

That sounds a lot like "Mutant League Football" (anyone ever play that) from way back, about 1994.

In that game, you had the Forty Weiners, and the big stud in the game was Bones Jackson.

I could think of a few names for players today:

Butt Fartver
Meshawn Johnson
Ace Staley
Ace Mcallister
Jeremy Electrical Discharge
Tanomlinson Dainian
Shishka Barber
Plummer Crack
Jesus Manning
Judas Manning
Rabbi Holmes

Perfectly. That used to happen all the time. I had a basketball game back in the day that didn't have the NBA lisence, so they changed the team names (keeping the same colors) and changing the player names while keeping the same initials.
