SWG billing problem
2004-12-13, 5:20 PM #1
I subscribed to about 4 months of SWG around the time it came out. I decided it sucked, stopped playing it around the time the 4 months were up. Now, suddenly, there's a bill for it charging 60 dollars to the credit card.

Firstly, they suck. Secondly, what can I do about it?

When you stopped playing, did you cancel your subscription?
If you didn't you are probably out of luck.

If you did, call their billing department and dispute it.

I thought the idea was you payed a set amount of money for a set amount of time, and bought more if and when you needed it.

Subscription based things like that tend to be that you'll continue to be charged unless you tell them otherwise. Either way, you need to call and figure out your account status.

Yeah, you pretty much might be screwed. Sony loves money.

I mean, I think it'd be cool, but aren't you forced into a class, that kinda, sorta, REALLY, definately stinks.

SWG was fun until everyone started powerleveling and duping. You know, before player cities, mounts, and vehicles, back when you could gather skins and bones alone in the dunes, travel back to town and put them up for sell, and then chill in the cantinas and browse the class lists and Holocron database. That was immersive and damn fun. Too bad the economy become so screwed new players probably wouldn't survive for long these days.

I didn't know you could do that all in five minutes.

It's part of marketing. Companies will offer you such and such amount of months free, and then when its up, if you don't call to cancel they continue to bill. It's legal cause the contract says it when you sign up and they are hoping you'll forget after the 4 free months to cancel.

It happened to me back in 1997 with PC Gamer. They sent me an offer for a free issue, I never got the issue but I got a subscription. I wrote to them telling them the free issue they offered wasn't the issue I recieved and I never asked for a subscription.
I can't think of anything to put here right now.

It's part of the text hidden in the middle of that License Agreement you're supposed to read whenever you install/play the game. Like everyone else has said, tis a legal money trap.

At least FFXI makes it perfectly clear that they charge you every month until you tell them otherwise. I swear, when I re-enabled my account, I got like 5 warning messages throughout the thing.

Yup. By clicking the 'I agree' box you enter a contract with these MMORPG games. As stated in the fine print, they'll keep charging your card until you tell them to stop.

Prezactly. As much as I dislike SWG and hate SOE, they aren't at fault in this instance. You have to unsubscribe.
