Imsoshort, those other smileys are images on other servers that people hotlink to so that they're visible in their posts.
For example, if the image is called banana.gif (where the .gif is the file extension of the image) and it is on a website such as
http://www.magicalfairyhairybunnyland.com (not a real website, this is just an example) in a subfolder called jimmysrockets, the image would be at
http://www.magicalfairyhairybunnyland.com/jimmysrockets/banana.gif
To attach the image to your forum post, you need to use the IMG tag, which you enclose with [ and ]. Like this: [ IMG ]http://www.magicalfairyhairybunnyland.com/jimmysrockets/banana.gif[ /IMG ]
BUT REMOVE THE SPACES IN BETWEEN THE BRACKETS AND THE IMG AND /IMG. This will of course display a red X, indicating that such image does not exist (because it's at magicalfairyhairybunnyland.com which does not exist):
