Have you guys installed it yet? I haven't. I've heard too many bad things about it. Firefox + Spybot and no problems here.

I really hate it, but I have it... but it sucks so I vote no.

I recently got a new computer, and it came with SP2 installed. BAH!

I held off installing it for a very long time on my old box. It's still not installed.

The latest Service Pack for Windows XP—Service Pack 2 (SP2)—is all about security, and it’s one of the most important service packs ever released. It provides better protection against viruses, hackers, and worms, and includes Windows Firewall, Pop-up Blocker for Internet Explorer, and the new Windows Security Center.

Wow, Windows has finally left the Dark Ages behind them...

I have Win2k. I hate XP. I hate downloading MS updates. The ONLY updates I download are Service Packs. And even then, usually not until it's been around for awhile.

SP2 fixes a lot of problems and vulnerabilities, not the least of which is the problem where the software firewall comes up a few seconds after networking comes online.

So basically everybody who doesn't get SP2 because they "don't trust Bill Gates" are gigantic ********s who get off on spreading worms. ********s.
2004-12-14, 9:06 PM #8
I had it, but it really messed up winblows, so now I wont touch it.
2004-12-14, 9:07 PM #9
SP2 also installs virus/firewall/automatic update BS on your computer even if you don't want it. I've turned the firewall off but I find it still somehow manages to mess with my stuff, and the automatic updates can't be turned off, you can either download and install the updates, or download the updates, or be notified every damn day for the rest of your life until you update. I don't need that. So poo on you JonC. Poo. On. You.
2004-12-14, 9:09 PM #10
Uhh you can turn off automatic updates.

Microsoft sucks even thought they try to fix some problems I don't turst them therefore I'll leave myself completely unprotected just to spit them.

SP2 sucks for the sole reason that it takes up enough of my system resources to create a noticeable hit in performance in games, even with their incredibly stupid and useless security crap.

I installed it almost right away after it became available. I had no problems what-so-ever during the installation, and it had no adverse effects, only positive ones, as far as I can see.

Nevertheless, I cannot vote here, because although I installed SP2, I don't trust Mr. Gates that much. But frankly, installing major software updates is a normal part of using any software, and releasing them is a normal part of the practices of any responsible software company.

EDIT: I voted anyway...

<-- Win98SE 'til a new DirectX comes out that they don't have an install for Win98SE AND I get a game that uses this new DirectX.

Then I'll update ONE of my 4 computers to whatever the modern Windows is when that time comes.

QM

P.S. - I am actually a big fan of MicroSoft, I just hate Windows XP.

Likes XP, has SP2, doesn't trust Bill one bit. Voted yes despite that though.

No adverse effects here either :)

You sir, are weird.

A. The next DirectX will almost absolutely not support Win98.
B. It's more stable than 98 could ever hope to be.
C. Its a hell of a lot more compatible than 98 could ever hope to be.

kthxbye :p

As for SP2, I have no comment, seeing as how I use Win2k :p

Hmm, I've had no problems with it. Turned off all the firewall, virus, etc it offered since have a better one. And if you get the automatic update box, it means you have a critical or security update you need to get. So why not just get it?

Damn, I swear I've never had any problem with ANY Windows update, and some of you are just paranoid.

Yeah, we might not like Microsoft, but I fail to see how a personal rebellion really is helping.

....Right...

I just don't have it because I don't need it. I've never used a firewall nor have I needed to have a virus scanner running in the background. I've never had problems with that ****. All I do is a weekly scan using Ad-Aware and AntiVir.

I did install SP2, but it caused CoH to break, so I uninstalled it. SP2 worked flawlessly apart from that.

XP SP2 made my network work slightly better. But XP networking is still voodoo magic.

Yeah, it made it a little more helpful for configuring wireless networking, but I'm more used to Linux's networking tools so I still don't like the way it's handled with SP2. :p

For about a year now I've been using no Anti-Virus whatsoever, and I surf all the time, using Internet Explorer no less. Every once in a blue moon, I'll throw on Norton to see if it finds anything. And it doesn't.

And someone who does have Norton on their computer could still get a virus. It just depends what you're doing with your computer (ie. where you're downloading stuff from).
2004-12-15, 10:30 AM #32
My Norton's tends to catch that type of stuff. If it doesn't catch it while it's downloading, it'll usually catch it afterwards. Besides, I have a habit of scanning any and ALL zip files I don't trust. And if it's an EXE, and I install it, Norton's without fails catches the suspect file whilst it's installing. I kill the installer, and remove the EXE.

I want to know WHAT flaw. I'd like to know just how it plans to fix it. I've NEVER seen any MS update tell me that. It'd let me know if I need it, because god knows I don't need every security update they put out.

I've got it...and on a CD too.
Because for all you doofs with 56ks who are like "omg download is huge" you can just order it for FREE. No strings attached. Oh wait...I gave Bill my home address. Oh well, he hasn't sent me any spam in my real life mailbox so he must still be EVIL.

I havn't noticed any problems with it and I like how the firewall asks me if I want to let a program through it or not.

So hmph.

And then you can wait for a few months while they send it to you.

That happened to me with their update disk. It took them a month and a half to get it to me. Then I found out I didn't need any of the crap on there.

There is this thing called brain that every person is supposed to have. Best anti-virus program there is.

And on the topic of SP2s security fixes, it's not the firewall that makes it more secure it's the fixes for XPs services. Running outdated (or unneeded but that's another topic) services is suicide. On Windows, as well as on every other OS. If every person kept his services up to date MSBlaster or Sasser never would've been so "successfull".

But noooooo, we won't donwload these evil updates. We don't trust old Bill he always wants to spy on us and steal our porn-collection. We use his software but that's about as much as we trust him and if we get infected by worms it's his fault because it has nothing to do with us being too lazy to download the newest evil updates (or leave evil automatic updates turned on).

If you are telling me you know exactly down to the very last byte how XP works before any updates... Well, I don't believe you. And if you don't know (which is what I believe in), then what damage does it cause to change one obscurity to another, especially if the latter one is said to be more secure?

We aren't living the Middle Ages anymore. You can't know the details of everything you do or use. In this world of today, you only know some finite parts of your own few specialties, and that's it, skipper. The rest you get from other people you can only assume know their stuff.

Well I tried to get SP2 going.

After downloading it, I tried to install SP2. IT went like this:

SP1 - > SP1.5 - > SP0.5 - > SP1.
I didnt try again.
