Alright, I need to settle an argument with someone.
Do Canadians consider themselves American being on the same continent, or do the see themselves as a seperate country and people? I know there are Canadians in this forum, so who better to settle this? What do you think? Discuss.

People who live in the United States - Americans, North Americans

People who live in Canada - Canadians, North Americans
Think while it's still legal.

Yeah, usually when referring to continent you say 'north american', to avoid confusion.

It's like calling Russians 'Asians'. It would be true, but most people think China and Japan when you say Asia.

Ah. So they are Americans but they aren't.

Yeah, I guess we're Americans... it's just awkwards that "American" has been assigned to citizens of the United States of America, since in addition to Mexico and Canada, there is also South America and it's countries. If the USA didn't have such a long name, or if people weren't so lazy, we wouldn't have these problems :p
2004-12-18, 11:59 AM #7
We're not Americans. We are Canadians. We are North Americans though, as well as the United states.
2004-12-18, 12:01 PM #8
It's just a precursor to the US taking over both continents. That way people from the Americas other countires won't feel so awkward. :p

People refer to them as Eurasians.

Russia is big enough to be a continent of it's own.

Technically, anyone living in South or North America is an American.

But yeah, the term American has pretty much been assigned to USA since what else are you gonna call em?

That was one of my brothers pet peeves, the americans refering to themselves as americans... since they are not the only ones living on the the north american continent... they are the united states OF america... but yeah... it's kinda hard to call them anything but american... nothing else seems to work.

We could call them Yankees. But then we'd have to call ourselves Canucks.

I could live with that.

Yankee does sound clearly inferior to Canuck.

That doesn't bother me in the least. :p

I'd always have Mexicans get mad at me for this for the 2 years I was down there. They'd always tell me that they were American's too since Mexico's full name is the United States of Mexico. :)
Life is beautiful.

How is 'Yankee' clearly inferior to 'Canuck'? Americans (the real kind) have traditionally taken great pride in the term 'Yankee'. Americans seem to have made a habit of adopting nicknames their opponents give them, like when the Germans called the Marines of World War I 'Devil Dogs'.

Of course, 'Devil Dog' is far cooler than 'Yankee', but unfortunately not all Americans are cool enough to be Marines.

To be honest, I can't think of any truly negative national slur except for 'Frog'. Poor Frenchies.

I didn't say it was inferior, I just said it sounded inferior, you Canadian-basher.

And don't mess with the Frogs. Sinon ma te calisser une autre poutine dans l'face, mon osti.

Funny.. I was always lead to believe that Yankee was the name given to those from the Southern USA in the Civil War that were in favor of slavery that fought against the north.

2004-12-19, 10:01 PM #30
I thought that's what the British called the Americans when they were fighting for independence...

The Brits called all the Americans Yankees, but when the civil war broke out the Northerners were Yankees and the ones in the South were... umm...

Southerners.
