A simple driving quiz you can all take...
2004-12-19, 4:57 PM #1
Before the accident I almost got into today on the road, I thought that all drivers knew this simple "rule" regarding intersections. But intersections, as I should have known, are the tricky obstacles in life and probably will be the end of me someday. So, before I will be overcomed by the incompetence in the driving world, I present you a situation and a question:

In the afternoon of some day, Echoman's kick-*** car* arrives at a stop sign before an intersection. At the same time another car, Car A, arrives at the intersection and slows for a stop sign. In order to progress with life, which car is allowed to cross the intersection first? Really cool diagram below.

Anyway, share some driving stories! :)

Your wording is a little unclear, so you both came to a complete stop at the same time?

Yes.

You generally go first, but neither of you has the right, sorry. "Right of Way" is a misnomer.

Logically he should move first since you are more central in his field-of-vision so he has better visibilty.

Car on the right has the right-of-way over the car on the left.

2004-12-19, 5:54 PM #7
yeah, actually it is a rule, when 2 cars meet at an intersection at the same time, the one on the right has the right of way.

Of course, that's assuming that they both have stop signs.
Fincham: Where are you going?
Me: I have no idea
Fincham: I meant where are you sitting. This wasn't an existential question.

Actually, echo has the right of way.

Echo has the right of way when two cars pull up to the intersection at the same time because Echo is the furthest right.

If I get to a 4-way stop and another car (not on the right) gets there at the EXACT same time I do, I slowly start to move out. If the other car doesn't move, I continue, but if he starts moving too, I let him go first.

Never had any problems with this method.

That's the same thing I do.

I'm confused, what's a stop sign?
2004-12-19, 7:31 PM #15
Furthest right wins.
2004-12-19, 8:11 PM #16
Yep. They taught me to remember that it's the right of way when you arrive at a stop sign at the same time. Mostly I just use the stop, then inch and watch method, though. Or, if there's a ton of cars as with this stupid new 4-way stop they put in at a bottleneck at my school, a pattern develops that you jsut hope to god everyone understands and doesn't try to jump the gun and break.

I'm afraid you all are mistaken, as the squirrel has the right of way. Cute furry little creatures always get to go first.

Besides, it's easy to run them over that way rather than jumping the curb.

Wait. I didn't think the squirrel was a choice.

Technically the law doesn't GIVE anyone the right. It merely asks/tells the other person to yield.

My driver's ed teacher stressed that point almost every day. No one GETS the right; the other person should yield.

Around here people usually wave for you to go if they don't want to.

Yep. Just work it out. If you're both stopped there's no reason there should be more than a split second of confusion.

If I get to the 4-way stop at the same time someone else does. I will go first, and as I'm driving by. Flip them off.

Similar for roundabouts here (even though you should give way to the right) - I'm with Page, edge out, be ready to either go or stop.

One road should have a give way sign, or even better a round-about. Problem solved.

England, Aus, NZ, India, Japan: You're both on the wrong side of the road, you both lose.

Miscellaneous third world countries: You both bothered to stop, you both lose.

USA, Canada and EU: The other guy was in the wrong.

Yeah. I forgot about other countries like the UK, India. :/

Whoa. When was the Squirrel option added? The squirrel was just a detail.

That seems like a logical thing to do. You can also check to see if the other guy is looking at you and signal him to pass first.

If you wave someone out into an intersection, and they get into an accident, its your fault. So be very careful if you do this.

Also, around here, the car on the right goes first. I've never encountered any problems with this, I guess its something that is stressed in every 5 hour class and drivers ed course so everyone knows the rule.
2004-12-20, 10:30 AM #35
Yea, "Right of Way" is correct, the car on the right has the right of way when you both arrive at the same time...anyone who drives should know that!
2004-12-20, 10:46 AM #36
Car A must let the squirrel pass, so you have the right of way:p

Possible answers (mind you I live in Chicago where "defensive driving" doubles your travel time :D):

1) The driver who is running later goes first...

2) The driver with the larger vehicle goes first as they would likely sustain less damage in an accident...

3) The driver with the faster vehicle goes first...

4) The driver less distracted by the squirrel goes first...

5) The vehicle with the hot girl in it goes first...

6) The driver with the tighter ride goes first...

7) The one with the tighter ride AND the hot girl definitely goes first...

8) The one with the tight ride and the driver IS the hot girl doesn't go first. You pull out, block the intersection, and then get her number... :)

Okay, I'm having too much fun with these.

See, i've been driving a couple of years and I don't think i've ever even encoutered such a junction. They're always either mini-roundabouts or use traffic lights to enforce who goes when.
