Rogue, Nethack, Slashem, CotW?
2004-12-21, 8:37 PM #1
I've recently started playing Nethack and Slashem again lately. I prefer nethack over slashem, but sometimes I'll load up slashem to try out the different classes and stuff. I haven't played CotW in several years, same with rogue.

Does anyone have any interesting/funny stories about their heroes?

"A Samurai descends deep into the dungeon, prepared to traverse the dark hallways until he has recovered the amulet of Yendor. Hachi, his faithful canine companion, follows him into the mouth of impending doom...or glory and riches. Immediatly upon entering the dungeon, the Samurai notices a fountain. Deciding that it would be a good idea to quench his thirst, as he may not find another source of water for many hours, he reaches his cupped hands into the fountain. Upon touching the surface of the water, a water demon erupts out of the water and kills the Samurai. And his dog."

and just now: "Well on her way to the amulet, the Ranger checks her supplies. Only a single ration left, and she's had it since she began her quest. It is surely spoiled, but it will have to do. After a couple more hours of dungeon crawling and creature slaying, she's out of food and near fainting. She's heard the sound of someone counting money, and is hopeful to find a shop nearby. Finally, she comes to the end of a long hallway with a door at the end. She tries the door, but it seems stuck. Using her last bit of strength, she kicks the door down. Standing in shock on the other side is the shop-keep, who quickly vanquishes her with his wand before she gets a chance to react. She falls dead on the ground. Her purse falls, and out falls all 1200 of her goldpieces, not 6 feet from a box of rations."

I play nethack now and then. One time i got so spiteful at it i played for like 5 hours and went through about 37 characters. The whole you can drink from a fountain at level 19 and die instantly, or any of the other 117 instadeath situations really tended to turn me off. That and the whole randomly generated dungeons-- which sometimes didn't even /have/ stairs down. Eventually i got even more spiteful and played it in Wizard mode with a bunch of genocide scrolls and a pickaxe.

I blame Flirbnic for getting me into it.
Also, I can kill you with my brain.

Rogue is fun. Nobody can beat the one professors high score on the Sun Server. Everyone loves the Amulet of Yendor.

1835 Caliban-Wiz-Elf-Mal-Cha died in The Dungeons of Doom on level 5. Killed by contaminated water.
36318 Shaja-Bar-Orc-Fem-Cha died in The Quest on level 14. Drowned in a pool of water by a giant eel.
35534 Girhtruud-Val-Hum-Fem-Neu died in The Dungeons of Doom on level 16. Killed by a zruty.

But the worst thing that happens is being killed by your own pet (can happen if you leave it behind) or after slipping while trying to mount a saddled pony called Lutz...
Starvation is also quite sad (but common for unexperienced adventurers).

The fact you cannot find some stairs does not mean that they are not there. There are stairs in EVERY dungeon level.

Ach, my favorite among these games is, and most likely will remain, Ancient Domains of Mystery. Heck, I believe that just might be one of the first games that really introduced me to how RPGs kinda worked. The game has a sense of being an incredible epic adventure(loved worldmap and all), yet has the good ol' randomly generated dungeons(who always have exits, just kick the right door down).

Mmmm, I oughta see if I still have some quest log of some of my old character around.
The answer is maybe.

Instead of also wasting diskspace you could've provided a link to tthe game's website, by I guess being an *** is easier.

www.nethack.org There's also a win client available, for ya sissy winnieboyz. It got more detailed "graphics" than the *nix versions.

That actually indicates a secret treasure room, not a shop. Some of the shop messages are:
"You hear the chime of a cash register."
"You hear someone cursing shoplifters."

Well, one time my brother was playing and instead of getting a bunch of rooms with hallways, he just had one large room. Needless to say, the swarm of monsters that attacked him did him in pretty quick.

Good lord, I hate creatures who paralyze you. On the other hand, ADOM has received some mayor improvements since the last time I played it. There is even a 'feat' system, so to speak.
The answer is maybe.

Honestly, I probably would have left it alone if he hadn't just posted this in the QFT thread

Well ok, i revise that statement.

There /are/ stairs in every level. Sometimes you just have to dig through 7 walls and then teleport half the map away to find them. Or simply wish for a pickaxe and dig straight down.

The whole starting in a single room with no exits and no other rooms nearby thing happens more often than really should.
Also, I can kill you with my brain.

One of the best parts for me are when I'm stranded, trying to find the way out before I starve to death. I guess it's personal preference, though. That's why alot of people play AdoM.
