I played the demo for months on end before I got the full version (I didn't have the cash to spare). When I got it, I think the version numbers were up to 1.04. Online play still sucked, just not as much, because of the customized games.
Gearbox still screwed the port in other ways though. The weapons in Halo on Xbox were for the most part, pretty well balanced. They translated all of that directly to PC. The weapons are now unbalanced in multiplayer. It's harder to aim with dual-thumbsticks than with a mouse. Lets take pistol headshots for example. Those aren't easy to get on Xbox unless you're skilled. On PC, they are insanely easy. They should have rebalanced the weapons in multiplayer.
The Flamethrower is an essentially useless weapon. It's simply never worth the trouble to pick up. I've only used it on three or four occasions. It's main downfall is it's range. It has what, two or thee times the range of a melee attack? If you've managed to get that close to a person from behind, why not just go for the silent kill instead of fireing on them, which tells them an enemy is back there, and will probably get you killed before they die. If you're attacking from the the front, you're pretty stupid.
The Fuel Rod Cannon is an awesome weapon, but it acts essentially like the Conc from JK. It has the explosive power of the Rocket Launcher. Ok. It's a mortar weapon. Big plus. It has an energy supply like the plasma weapons. Uh, no. That allows you to get off so many shots it's rediculous. Fuel Rods, like the name implies, are supposed to be radioactive rods that explode on contact with an object. Not an energy weapon. Thus ammo should have been provided. The way the Fuel Rod works in Halo 2, is what it should have done in Halo PC.
The Banshee in Multiplayer was an excellent idea. It added a third dimension to vehical combat, air support and defense. You could already go anywhere, you just couldn't go up. The Banshee's downfall? Idiot players who treat it as a car and run it along the ground crushing others. The weapons were overly powerful, and it wasn't exactly always easy to kill the pilot. Lastly, the Banshee was added into levels that were simply not designed to support it. Blood Gulch did NOT need a Banshee. The level ceiling is too low, the level is too small. Sidewinder was a decent level for it. Gearbox's Death Island was a level designed with the Banshee in mind. That level worked perfectly for the Banshee.
The Rocket 'Hog. Firstly, wtf were they thinking? Alright, it's a nice idea, but the implementation completely and totally sucks. The Rocket 'Hog is completely useless for anything other than transportation from Point A in a non-combat zone, to Point-B, also in a non-combat zone. Why? The mounted rocket launchers blow. You have three rockets before you need to reload. This is fine. Those three rockets NEVER go to the same place when fired. This is NOT fine. Now, if you fireing them off quickly, that would work for me. The recoil from the first rocket has thrown off your aim a bit, so the second isn't going to go to the same spot. But it doesn't work that way. Pick a spot, and fire all three rockets slowly. Watch just how far away from the center of the crosshairs they go. That makes the rockets useless. That vehical would be the perfect mobile anti-vehical weapon if those rockets flew at least mostly straight, but they don't. And if they don't go straight, your chances of hitting a target drop. A lot. The reload time is also pretty bad, but again, if the rockets acted like you'd expect them to, that would be a manageable problem.
I'm happy to see Halo on PC just like loads of other people are, but the fact is, Gearbox screwed major portions of the game up when they ported it. The additions overall are bad. Balance was left as is, instead of modified for system it was being ported to. I find myself using Halo PC as more of a boredom killer than anything else. If I want a serious game of Halo, I switch on my Xbox and pop in the disk. Everything is better. It just feels cleaner, every weapon has a drawback and an advantage. An advantage that can be countered by another weapon. And lastly, for me, there is no greater joy than to FEEL what's happening as I play. I don't just hear and see the grenade next to me detonate, I feel it through the controller. I feel the kickback of my weapons as I fire. And if the guy I'm playing with makes a lame kill, I can punch him. You can't do that online.
Bah... and I said I wasn't going to do that.
