So who out there has an iPod?
2004-12-27, 8:04 PM #1
I got an iPod (normal 20gb) for Christmas, but I'm having problems(I've read the manual and watched a few select tutorials) and I don't know if it is because I'm a dumbass or Apple is messing with me.

1) Where is the button to copy music from the CD to iTunes? I found it once with one CD, but then I put in another CD(in which it displayed all the new songs with the already copied songs) and I couldn't find it again.

2) Is there any way to delete songs from the iPod(without the use of iTunes)?

3) Is there any way to create and organize playlists in iPod(without the use of iTunes)?

4) Is there a way to disable the auto-update(the one where iTunes automatically updates and loads songs into the iPod when it is connected)? If there is a way, how do I do it manually then?

5) When copying music from a CD, is it possible to have iTunes copy it in .wma format and put it into the iPod in that format?

Thank you for any help.

No idea on the first 4, but the answer to the last one is No. You'll need to convert it.

There's an "Import CD" button on the upper right when you play a CD in iTunes, IIRC.

For all your questions regarding doing things without iTunes, there are plenty of programs out there. Google is your friend.

3) There is a thing called "On the go playlists" where you can add songs too a playlist by holding the center button while the song is selected.

Not if I shoot you first.

/me shoots.

Seriously, if I wasn't so totally broke right now I'd buy one. I think iPods are awesome little toys. Not to mention it's a hellova lot easier to carry my music with me. My CD Walkman just doesn't really cut it anymore.

To the questions!

1) The button has been pointed out, but you see those checkboxes next to the tracks? If you uncheck one when it's on the CD, it won't get imported, or played when the CD is in the drive. If it's in your playlist and you uncheck it, the only way the song will ever play is if you double-click it. I find those to be VERY helpful when I only want certain tracks. It's far easier than waiting for all the tracks to import and then delete the ones you don't want from the playlist, and from the library.

2) It's been answered.

3) Answered.

4) There was a thread about this awhile back. I forget how you needed to do it (not having an iPod, it was something I felt I need not remember) but it involved switching the iPod over to a HardDrive mode. Something like that. I'm sure I have all of the fuctions and names completely wrong, but I do believe that is essentially what you were doing.

5) In iTunes go to Edit/Preferences and then click the Importing tab. You can choose the format used to import there. .wma is not one iTunes offers.

Damnit I need monies. Anyone care to donate?

Which one of those formats requires the least amount of space?

I need music.

I NEED it. I'm sure if I were born in a society without music, I wouldn't but at this point if it was taken from me, I would kill myself. I need music.

That doesn't mean I need an iPod, though.

Several CD pouches, if you're me. Also, you have to take the time and money to burn compilations before heading out, and even then you'll only have a few. I have thousands of compilations at my finger tips. I have all my music with me at all times, instead of a selection I thought I might want to listen to before I left the house. And have you ever tried changing CDs while on crowded public transport? Not fun.

I have a well-paid job and can afford a few luxuries, especially ones I use every single day like my portable music system. A portable mp3 player is a convenience worth the price tag for me. If you cant understand that, well then you need to grasp that different people have different priorities.

I was toying around with the idea of purchasing a portable player, but alas, none (bar one, which is too expensive/big) support gapless playback

It'd be about 30-40 CD pouches for me. It's more convenient to carry it all in a small 3x5 metal case than it is to carry it in large, unwieldy CD pouches. Not to mention, you can carry OTHER stuff in an iPod too. Makes it very convenient.

I can see the romance, but usually, when I'm out of the house, I'm out of the house DOING something. Music isn't something I need to have, or in some cases, really should have. XM radio sounds like a more reasonable waste of money, to me.

Most of me being out of the house is at school. Which means music, basically.

All the others have kinda already been answered but there is a much easier why for this one than doing all that fuss related to switching it to Hard Drive mode....

if you look at the attached image, all you need to do to manage you songs and playlist by yourself is click on the ipod looking button and switch over to manual control, easy as pie....

You don't listen to alot of music, do you? I practially ALWAYS have something playing in the background. Be it my mp3 collection over iTunes or the radio, which more and more frequently is starting to play stuff I don't like hearing.

Now, I have 30 minute breaks between all of my classes next semester. I can't get to a computer, because they're always in use. That leaves music, or sleeping. Sleeping is awesome, but with a set time like 30 minutes, it's difficult to fall asleep without waking up every 5 minutes to make sure I'm not going to be late. Music becomes a more preferable choice. Hauling around my Walkman, plus a CD wallet 5 days a week just so I can listen to music for the 2 spare hours I don't have classes is stupid. I can shove an iPod in my pocket and have my entire collection of music at my fingers in seconds.

There are ALOT of reasons why I'd love to have one, and why it'd be loads more convienent. Just because you think it's a waste of cash and completely pointless, doesn't mean it is.

I'd suggest using both iTunes and another software program to work with the features of your iPod.

iTunes does a great job of creating a database of music, indexing nicely and syncing nearly seamlessly with the pod, but the notes features, contacts features, calender stuff you can do with the Pod is useful for those of us who don't have a PDA.

I have an iPod, and think it's leet (well, it's a mini). Before I had one, I didn't really see the need for one, but still thought they were pretty leet. (Although iRiver's got some cool crap).

Who? You can't mean all the people who explicitly said over and over that they don't want to carry several CD cases around with them while they're out, can you?

I love my iPod, for the various reasons already stated in this thread.
