Ok, I am wondering, what program(s) do I need to get me started in the construction of Flash games and movies? I think it would be a fun hobby to do in my spare time, so I was just wonderin', thanks!

All you really need is a copy of Flash MX (I personally prefer Flash 5, but that's just me) and a good actionscript and animation tutorial (or someone willing to spend the time to teach you, live people are always better than tutorials) . Maybe Photoshop or the like, but it would just be for extra, unneeded items.

if you want to do stuff fast, get you hands on a copy of adobe livemotion. It's technically abandonware, siince adobe quit making it last year, so if you get an iso, I doubt anyone would stop you. It's nearly as powerful as flash mx (I could do anything in LM that I could do in mx, only much easier)

Old aunts used to come up to me at weddings, poking me in the ribs and cackling, telling me, "You're next." They stopped after I started doing the same thing to them at funerals.

You can pick up copies of Studio MX 2004 at many university bookstores for dirt cheap. FreeHand and Flash work well together. I'm currently taking a Flash class and I love it, despite my teacher's weaknesses with actionscript.

For tutorials and message forums regarding Flash, I use:

Just cause it's abandonware doesn't mean Adobe will allow it to be freely distributed.

Most people think that flash is one of the easiest programs to write web based games in but in reality there are a lot easier ways to make them. Actionscript can be a bit "limited" at times"
