Well considering the DS doesn't have much of a library yet, and the PSP hasn't even been released, I'd say either hold out for a while or ask for a different gift.

I'm partial to Nintendo mostly because I think they put making the best game system above making money. Stupid business-wise though. I'll explain my reasoning for this in a second. However, in this case I think I'm starting to lean towards the PSP. The DS just doesn't seem very practical and feels abit awkward. The PSP on the other had has a brilliant and large screen and just looks like it will feel much better. I also think that it will garner large support while Nintendo will most likely continue to lose support.

Nintendo "pro-gaming/anti-market" history:

SNES - perfected the hardware allowing the Sega Genesis (using off the shelf components) to release first and gain foothold.

N64 - stuck with costlier cartridge based system instead of going to CD. Avoided load times and performed better. PSone kicked its ***.

Gamecube - smaller than competition. Outperformed PS2. Chose not to include movie and CD play capability since everyone already has them and built a pure game machine. PS2 kicked its ***.

There's more but that's the big stuff in a nutshell.

Well the Japanese versions are in english, they're just...released in japan.

Wait until it comes out here though--you won't be sorry. All the bugs will be ironed out, all the games will be released, the PSP already has a nice little library for a launch, one that more than rivals the DS'. The only downside is the batter doesn't last as long as the DS', but personally, I don't really care about that. That's why they made chargers.

Up to you.

I never got into handheld gaming, but I did play a DS at EB and it was cool. Buttons were really freaking small though.

I still can't get over the fact that I'm playing SM64 ON A HANDHELD. :D

The DS was a no brainer for me. I've heard issues about the PSP's battery life, but what really drew me to the DS is because I know I can rely on having a great software library at my fingertips. :) <3 Nintendo.

I JUST bought a DS. It's freaking awesome. It's like a palmpilot but it costs less, with wireless multiplayer for kick *** games.
Think while it's still legal.

I never really gotten into handheld gaming. Maybe you should ask your grandfather to get you a PS3, Nintendo Revolution, or X-Box 2 when they come out.....

I would say the DS...

I'm sure the PSP will have better graphics, and all, but I find the rest of it's features far more than I want... I don't want a video player, mp3 player, etc... on my handheld gameplayer... when it comes to portable gaming systems I prefer to have it just play the games, and not have a bunch of fancy extra crap I won't ever use.

Plus, I just don't like how Sony is (seemingly) trying to take over the market... The only real system to worry about for a long time was a Nintendo system... the competition was few and far between... then Sony Released the PSX, and destroyed Nintendo's sales, and it's been hurting Nintendo since, everyone's being spoiled and wants all the extra crap the system comes with, if it doesn't have it, they just immediately dismiss it, and it's for that reason the Cube lost a good portion of it's potential sales. Sure it's sales went up for christmas and such, but that's because it's such a cheap system.

But I was fine with all that, because Nintendo still had the handheld market, though the Cube's sales did help quite a bit, that helped keep them in the market overall... and now Sony is coming out with the PSP, and that's gonna hurt Nintendo even more, because of all the bells and whistles it's got.

At least that's the way I see it... I'm not the biggest fan of Sony's consoles, but that's not to say I won't buy them, they're still great, but I'll always pick Nintendo first, then buy the Sony product later.

I agree. Businesses should never try to make money or improve on concepts.

I never said that... I'm just a slight fanboy who's a bit mad at Sony (albeit without much right) for knocking Nintendo's sales quite a bit.

I just don't want to see nintendo get knocked out... though unlikely...

I just don't like the idea of mixing portable video and audio into a portable gaming system...

But that's just because I have very little use for those features... I'm certain many others do, but I don't, and I'm more likely to pick the one without the features because it's cheaper... might be lacking in other aspects (graphics, possibly the game selection, etc...) but the sacrifices are probably worth it for the cheaper price.

I've never really been able to get over the fact that the Sony Playstation line has labeled its four main buttons with friggin' shapes. I mean c'mon! It's like they're trying to target the 4-year-old audience with those controls.

As for the DS vs. the PSP, let's try to guess which one would be able to support a good RTS game... Since the DS seems to be all about the right remakes, I fell that the library will be rather nice, particularly with rumors that FF III will finally cross the Pacific as a DS game, and here's to hoping that Blizzard will be arsed to move from WoW enough to make a re-make of StarCraft for the DS. Sending my Zealots and Dragoons into battle by dragging with my fingertips just won't be able to be beat.
