God I hate spyware...It seems my computer has been viciously infected with it. Everytime I open the internet it changes my home page to this stupid site (www.martfinder.com) and then gives me a popup saying "Your computer has been infected with spyware!" and provides links to programs that "get rid of it" but which probably just give me more.

I ran AdAware with the most recent updates and all it found was some cookies which I deleted but that didn't fix it.

Is there a better program?

Browser Hijackers strike again.....

Just reinstall windows. That's the only real way to make sure that you kill all the spyware. (since spybot/adaware may not catch the latest incarnations of these browser parasites)

Use firefox. I use IE only for windows update, and only b/c windows update doesn't like firefox and wont work with it.

I'm not going to go all GBK on you, but giving linux a try wouldn't hurt, either. [http://forums.massassi.net/html/smile.gif]

Old aunts used to come up to me at weddings, poking me in the ribs and cackling, telling me, "You're next." They stopped after I started doing the same thing to them at funerals.

Following the instructions on this webpage, I was able to easily get rid of a homepage hijacker without reformating and reinstalling windows:

Specifically, you want to use some of the programs from this site that target that kind of thing:

Also, if you use internet explorer, its a good idea to turn off activex for the internet zone, and then add the sites that you need it for to your trusted sites list. This alone will make IE 100 times more secure.

No no no no no

That's like having a broken door and putting a moscito net in front of it to keep burglars away

or

a dangerous hole in the ground and covering it loosely with a carpet

I have a "personal firewall" or "desktop firewall" for my personal computer. Is my computer secure?

No. A firewall system without a concept about what to protect is dangerous for the carrier. Without deeper knowledge about such a concept you shouldn't plan and build up such a system.

A desktop-firewall can help you to learn more about your system, but it can't help you being more secure. Better prevent using a desktop-firewall by following the guidelines described in "I have open ports, what are they used for?" and "How can i find out what's happening on my interfaces/network?".
