Revisiting Final Fantasy VII

Being that it has been seven years since I last played the game. I decided to play it again and well, I sure do feel nostalgic. Aside from the graphics, the game still hold his own very well. Aerith's theme is still one of the best character theme in VG music history. I also never realized how deep the plot was, read the plot analysis. Now I can remember why I chose this name as my internet alias...or maybe it's not an internet alias.

FFVII was definitely a lot of fun. Even my g/f loves it.

I still prefer FF6, but 7 was still awesome.

I've never played through FF7. The midis are just too high pitched for me. It hurts to play. And then waiting for some character's animations to jiggle a little bit, and some text that makes NO sense unless you could actually see what the animation was TRYING to represent is just too much to wait for in a game.

Funny that you would talk about this. I just played through FF7 again over Christmas. I even did it in 22 hours (I had to hurry so I skipped the side quests).

I'm not really a console player and tried FF7 for the first time (!) 6 months ago. You know something is right when this here PC player plays some 7 year old PSone game for the first time and is impressed.

If you're looking into playing the game, keep in mind that:

1) You should use an emulator (like ePSXe 1.5.2) and play the playstation version of the game on your PC that way. The PC version, aside from some dialogue improvements, is worse than the original and uses an odd sound codec that makes the music sound bad. You also can't save anywhere.

2) Use the TV-Out feature on your graphics card if you're playing it on the PC. The pixelatic backgrounds look much better on a TV that melts everything together more. There will still be lots of low-poly character models however.

3) Random battles and poorly translated text
(My favorite:
Cloud: "...Hmm. That's how you'll fool them."
Aeris: "..Hmmmmmmm. So that's how you fooled them.")
can get annoying sometimes but bear with it. I did.

That's not an odd codec. That's MIDI.

You can get the original music files from the PSX version, and use them in place of the PC MIDI music. Sounds exactly as it did on the PSX, and is a good alternative if you don't have the PSX discs.

FF7 is definatly a great game. Hands down one of the best in the FF series. Even though I havn't played it in nearly 2 years, I still remember almost everything to do with it.

FF6 and FF1 are the only others in the FF series that I like more, then FF4 followes closely behind 7.

I thought so, but how did they get One Winged Angle with the latin chants into a MIDI format?

That's standard PCM audio, IIRC. It does sound like crap, might have happened in the conversion, or with a lousy codec, like you said.

I thought you were talking strictly about the music though.

I played up until I fell out of some stupid floating casino with a talking cat-thing into some prison place, or something.

I think it was at the point where I battled a small house that I decided that anyone who thought this was a great game was obviously insane...

It would have been better if there had been less padding. Frankly, I'd prefer a great 20 hour experience to an OK 100 hour experience.

I played up the Golden Saucer (second time, this is after you get the cat and do stuff, then go back), and I've been meaning to get back to it since. Unfortunately, Prince of Persia 2, Metroid Prime 2, World of Warcraft, Anarchy Online, the Sims 2, Half-life 2, and some others have distracted me.

There is a hack that lets you use the commercial soundtrack (in mp3 format) instead of the midis in the PC version. There are a few others as well.

I know what you mean by those MIDIs too. Recently I, listened to updated orchestrated mp3 tracks of FF7 and they sound infinitely better. Email me or PM me if you want a sample....

Do you have a link of some sort? I only know a piano version of the soundtrack:

Right now I've been playing FF9 on my Emulator (since i was never able to beat it back in the day and i just got a usb thing that allows me to use my PSX controller).

I know no one ever talks about FF9 since alot of the people that got into Final Fantasy came from FF7 but, i would have to say this is my 3rd favorite final fantasy (FF6 and FF4 beat it out hands down).

I remember when i heared about FF7 and after the masterpiece of FF6 I decided to get a Playstation as soon as it came out. It was suppose to be translated perfectly since it would be done by square's new division in LA, hehe looks like they should have hired some english speaking editors while they were at it. I don't know but FF7 just didn't feel like Final Fantasy and i never really got into it. I think alot of that has to do with some of the uninspired music and maybe cause my expectations were so high. I might go back and play it again when I'm done with FF8 (I'm going to play all the Final Fantasy's I own from FF9 all the way down to FF1).

Also if anyone is interested in revisting FF6 and FF4. I would suggest playing them on an emulator using the translation versions ( I know ff6 and ff4 are in english but alot of things were cut from the japanese version as well as some censored text that makes no sense after a while).

You sure it's okay for me to post mp3 links? There are only a few orchestrated tracks.
