Far Cry... best game I've played this year. I havent played either Doom3 or HL2 yet though.

To me, I say it was a close call between Unreal Tournament 2004 and Half-Life 2. UT2k4 gets an unfair disadvantage for actually being released at a reasonable date, as by the end of the year when the awards are given out, it's largely forgotten. While Half-Life 2 provides by far the most immersive experience I've to see in a game, UT2k4 has all games within a several-year radius beat when it comes to gameplay value and innovation.

I don't play PC games, but for a console game of the year, it's a tough choice between Halo 2, Metal Gear Solid 3, and Knights of the Old Republic 2. I would have to go with Metal Gear... or maybe Knights... but not Halo 2.

Out of those that I've actually played...

PC: Half-Life 2

Console: Knights of the Old Republic 2

Between the two, for overall "game of the year" I'd choose KotOR2. It's just more fun to me. Plus, it actually makes me laugh while playing the dark side.

I haven't played any '04 PC games but for console I would have to say that Chronicles of Riddick: Escape from Butcher's Bay for the XBox should get at least an honorary mention. Great atmosphere. Decent FPS. Great adventure game. Hand to hand implemented very well into an FPS. Great cutscenes and possibly best FPS graphics yet shown on a console. Replayability limited to how much enjoy going back to various stages and trying different tactics. Not sure how well it will survive the translation and competition on the PC side but for a single player experience on the XBox, it really came out of nowhere.
