Very true, the first one would have been even better if they spent less time cutting off each others clothes at the start and showed more things blowing up.

Your best bet would be to find a copy of the DVD.

I despise anime with all of my being, and yet somehow I dug all of the Animatrix shorts. They may be anime influenced, but they're definitely fully animated and some of the styles are mindblowing.

There is always one or two of the animatrix shorts that people liked. My fav was the training one with the feudal japan theme. ROCKED SHOP!!

I liked Kid's Story and Detective's Story, and yes it was on Adult Swim last night.
2004-04-18, 7:52 PM #30
Well, after watching it last night on Adult Swim, here is my take on each of the shorts played:

Final Flight of the Osiris: This was a good film (brought to you by the makers of Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within) but it seem too short for me. It left me wanting more at the end. Animation was top-notch as usually and the swordfight strip tease scene was... interesting. Just wish it was a little longer (the other half I mean).

Kid's Story: This was a rather interesting one. Directed by the guy that did Cowboy Bebop, this film feature animation that wasn't exactly anime but was very high quality it the way everything moved fluently. We finally know who the hell that annoying kid was in the beginning of Reloaded that kept hanging around Neo.

Detective's Story: Good but lacking. The story proceeded well but towards the end, it left you hanging. You don't know exactly waht happens to the detective at all in the last scene.

Program: This samurai tale was interesting. The fighting was pretty good and the struggle that the girl had to endure with her lover's decision was interesting to watch. The ending was a nice relief from what occurs in the climax.

World Record: I didn't like this one much. The animation was odd (looked too exaggerated). The only thing interesting was the ending.

Beyond: This one was interesting to say the least. Being about to witness a part of the matrix malfunctioning was an interesting premise for a short film. Not a whole lot happened though other than seeing the kids mess around with the messed up laws of physics and than being ousted out by the agents sent in to fix the glitch.

Matriculated: This was a really ODD story. Made by the same guy that brought us "Aeon Flux" and "Reign: The Conquer", the animation was bizzare to say the least. The story wasn't all to interesting and it ends on a rather sad note (although not as sad as Osiris)

Second Renaissance: Interesting stort film as it finally lets us know why the machines and the humans are at war. It starts out in a future where machines (androids) were used by humans as servants and laborers. However, one of the machines turned on his master and the machines later joined in rebellian against the humans. The humans responded with hatred and began to kill the machines by the hundreds. The machines then left human civilization to create a nation called "01". There, they machines became a industry giant with humans relying on them for goods and services. The machines then wanted to join the UN but the UN rejected them. The humans then went to war with them, sending nukes into "01" in attempts to destory them. However, the machines survived their attacks and one by one, they started to take over human nations. The humans then decided to cut off the machine's supply of power by blocking out the sun. Their attack failed and the machines then resorted to using humans as batteries and you know the rest. Anyhow, from this story, I can't help but feel that the story could have better developed. It sounds WAY too much like the movie "AI" and has some really bad plot holes here and there. At least though that the story isn't a rip off of the Terminator.

Final Flight of the Osiris: Quite pretty. Opening is totally unnecessary and, well... just boring. Does get better towards the end. Overrated. 7/10

Kid's Story: Interesting style, good use of rotoscoping. Nothing really happens though. Gets plus points for use of Peace Orchestra though (Kruder + Dorfmeister RULE!). 7/10

Detective's Story: Lovely style. Nice feel. The design doesn't really fit with the films (strange dialers, typewriter computer), and again nothing really happens. Feels a bit rushed. 8/10

Program: Eh. It's just the Cypher plot from the first film, set to the background of a feudal Japan simulation. Nicely animated and good colour scheme. 7.5/10

World Record: Interesting concept. Nice minimalist angular style. Doesn't overstay it's welcome. Well animated. Liked the design, even if it was strange and exaggerated, at least it dared to be different. 8.5/10

Beyond: Liked it. Doesn't feel rushed. Very beautiful and strange. Nothing happens, but it this one benefits from the relaxed feel.
9/10

Matriculated: Just not very good at all. Too long, tries too hard, garish use of CGI, hideous design and boring. Oh, and monkeys with implants? Does this mean that there's a monkey-matrix?
4/10

Second Renaissance: I'm torn between this one and Beyond. Very well animated, unintrusive use of CGI, good sound, well directed. I love how most of the stuff is shown in news footage or documentary style with many references to historical events (Execution as the famous Vietnam footage, tanks rolling on as in Tienanmen, remains being bulldozed into a pit as in deathcamps etc). Laden with symbolism too (Fly lands on 01 location on UN emblem, strange morphing objects, robotic horse and rider burns). Oh, and the battlefield sequence is very well made. pure chaos, shown from the eye level against a bizarre carnival like procession of robots. Really good. 9/10

General Consensus: 7.5/10
Buy it if you can find it for under 20 €. Technichally it's all good. Clean picture, sharp sound.
If it breaks, you get to keep both pieces.
2004-04-18, 10:48 PM #35
Matriculated is awesome!

I guess its all in the visuals, the plot was pretty cruddy.

Apart from that, my favourite is probablys world record, program or beyond.

In all honesty, I thought Final Flight Of The Osiris sucked pretty bad... it looked nice, but it was boring... Matriculated is one of the few things i've seen that can be awesome by just looking curious.

i watched it back when the dvd first came out and i had already seen the web-released ones before that...

Second Renaissance was very good; informative, interesting style of animation etc

Detective's Story and Kid's Story were probably my favourites... probably because of Shinichiro Watanabe [http://forums.massassi.net/html/biggrin.gif]

most of the others were just... weird.
the one where humans capture a machine and put it into the "reverse matrix" type program was just whacky.

I'm not sure if you guys are seeing it for what it's supposed to be. I say this after 2 comments on World Record being over exagerated.

Kids Story is incredible. The way it is animated and the story itself (in that order).
He's 'kid' from the movie. He self substantiated. This kid was 'bending rules' before he truely believed. And the animation of him skating and bending the rules was done so well.
He's also integral to the movies. He keeps thanking Neo for helping him get out. Neo keeps telling him he didn't help him and it helps Neo deny that he is the one.

World Record had to be exagerated. Here's a guy so exeptional in his sport, so focused on setting the record, he's about to break the rules yet he doesn't know it. The agents go after him so that he doesn't wake up yet his focus is too much. He's out running the agents. Simply amazing, and so well animated that it took a cool concept and made it one of the top 3 shorts on the disc.

In Program, wasn't that her brother, not her lover?

Oh and see my sig for a quote from Matriculated. A strange but good short on the disc. The humans are taking back the machines one by one. This time they failed.

The Agents in World Record, their designs are extremely cool. I'm pretty sure that was the girl's brother in Beyond.
2004-04-20, 1:12 AM #39
World Record is my favorite. It definitely had the best ending. They leave it up yo you to decide if he'll ever get out. I think he will. They said he'd never walk again, but before he's even left the hospital, he takes a step. Sure, he fell after that first step, but he'll get up and try again.

I like Detective's Story for it's style. Though I don't love the ending, it's acceptable.

Kid's Story made Kid seem cool. I didn't like him in the movies. He was annoying in Reloaded. I liked him in Revolutions until he said "Neo, I believe" right before shooting the chain. It just seemed like such a horrible thing to say at that time. I would have prefered he just shot the chain instead of wasting time to say something. At least the line made more sense to me after hearing him say it in Kid's Story.

Second Renaissance was simply great. It makes you feel sorry for the machines. Why can't we all just get along?
