Quick note: if you want to register a domain they actually do need a credit card number, but they won't charge it.

If I register everything under my name would it be ok if I put in one of my parents' credit cards?

Should be... but remember to tell your parents... but under the owner of the card feild you'ed have to put your fathers name or whoever owned the card.

What a sham. I put my name/address but I won't ever give out a phone number. They don't tell you ahead of time that they will actually USE your phone number to call you. So now they have my personal information but I can't "verify" my account. They do have a note about following some instructions if you have problems with the automated system:
Quote:
If you have any difficulties with the our automated activation system, please log on to the Control Panel, as explained at the top of the page. On the My Account page locate your package and click on the Confirm Order button. Please follow the instructions provided there to complete the authentication of your order.
However, there aren't any instructions "at the top of the page" as the note says. I sent them an email message asking them if I can still get a free trial, we'll see what happens. If they let me, I may go with them for the new Massassi dedicated server. If not, I'll be pissed because they got my personal information (name, address, and email address) and gave me nothing in return.

i assume they are giving out free hosting not only for us to try and hopefully subscribe to after the trial period, but also to collect marketing information.
i have the 3 year free plan with them too where i host a couple of sites. in the past year of using their free hosting i have never gotten any spam that i can associate with them (other than the news letters i get from them about once every 3 months (i get no spam... i repeat NO spam at my home address that i use from my isp, nor do i get any spam from the address i have registered here)). i have never recieved a phone call from anyone that i don't recognize trying to market something to me (companies like sears have called).

hopefully that puts your mind at ease a bit brian.

Thank you for contacting 1&1

Setting up accounts without a phone number is not possible. It is one among the many requirements needed in
signing up for a package. Information of clients and or customers within 1and1 are kept confidential.
Within few days, incomplete account registration will be autmatically deleted from the system.

If you have any further questions do not hesitate to contact us.
Screw them.

Did you register with your parents credit card? Did you have to change the name of the owner of the domain?
