Fear My Culinary Skill!

Yes, I am a bachelor. However, unlike most bachelors my cooking skills are quite good. I just made an extremely arse kicking soup. I work at Costco so when I saw the Bear Creek Cheddar and Broccoli soup that you just add water to I rejoiced. Then I saw the 30 pound bag of imported Indian Basmati rice! Rejoicing squared. Today I remembered I still have a whole bunch of leftover ham from Christmas. So I choped the ham into 2 cm cubes, put the rice into the four cups of water required by the mix, poured in my ham and waited for the soup to boil. When it came to a rolling boil I poured in the soup mix and stirred. Then I reduced heat and let simmer for 20 minutes. Yum!

PS: The superiority in the tone of this post is completely false and meant to be entertaining to myself. However, the soup is quite delicious.

I recently made a similar culinary discovery...

What you need:

4 large chicken breasts (or 8 - 10 breast filets)
1 jar chopped mushrooms
1 can french onion soup
1 can cream of mushroom soup
1 small to med size bag of rice
1 bag frozen broccoli
2 cups water
1 stick margarine (or butter)
1 can cooking spray or crisco
1 GLASS (metal will overcook) baking pan LARGE

Preheat oven to 425 deg F (celc I wouldn't be bothered to tell)
coat baking dish with spray or crisco
insert chicken breasts to lay flat on bottom
mix musrhooms and soups in a bowl
cover chicken breasts with rice (only cover, do not BURRY)
pour soups and water into pan to mix with rice and chicken
chop butter into four tblspoons and place throughout dish
place broccoli into mix at your discretion

Cook the entire thing for 1.5 - 4 hours (depending on how frozen your chicken is this should just be watched to see how tender it is and where you like your meat to be cooked) and then remove allow to cool to taste and enjoy. It's awesome. I love it. It's the 3rd time I've made it and everybody always agrees.

I work for Costco as well. Chances are, if you're on the west coast, I shipped that bag of Cheddar and Broccoli soup to you (Depot 960).

I can cook a few minor things, I wish I cold cook better. I don't have the patience. When I really try, though, things come out good. I make omeletes sometimes, and they're always tasty.

I wouldn't consider AZ the West Coast but, I'm in the Superstition Springs store 433.

I always ruin my omelets as I can be easily distracted. BTW the soup comes in a plastic tub. It's too bad that my location doesn't have the Bear Creek Potato Cheddar soup... I used to get that from the Stockton, CA store.

I make those pretty well too. I get the noodles just before they're tender and throw 'em in a pan so they fry. I add broccoli, chicken breast, chiles, garlic, carrots, small amount of sesame oil, and some cabbage. I add water as it fries so the noodles don't dry up and stick to the pan. Good stuff.

I can wok & stirfry
I can make porridge alright. Without it going ultra-lumpy or being watered down.
I can make Köyhiä Ritareita/Fattiga Riddare/French Toast
I'm pretty handy with a grill, as long as someone else does the marinading if necessary.
Oh, and the staple of the young Finnish suburban male student diet: the macaroni box.

I got this really good cookbook from my aunt upon graduating high-school, translated into English, it's labeled something like "Survival Kit: The Cook Book for Mama's Boys" :) It's like it was made for me.

Sidenote: The Once Upon A Time in Mexico DVD is almost worth renting for the 10 minute cooking school feature that accompanies the 10 minute flick school feature. It has Robert Rodriguez making Puerco Pibil.
If it breaks, you get to keep both pieces.

I hate ramen noodles.

I don;t know why, it just never appealed to me.
2005-01-06, 4:11 PM #18
At what time would one insert the egg into the ramen?
2005-01-06, 4:50 PM #19
Scramble an egg, mix it in with the ramen once the ramen is soft. I wouldn't try it anywhere but on a stove. It's done when it looks like scrambled egg. You'll want to mix it a little.

What do you mean, "while there's still water in it?" You don't drain ramen noodles. At least not the instant ones.

I also got a wok for Christmas too, I made some nice vegetables in it last week.

Nope. With traditional ramen, you boil some water, then put the noodles in the water and bring it to a boil again (or till however tender you like your noodles). Shut off the heat and mix the flavoring in.

I always cook the noodles in the broth, instead of making it after. I find it tastier. :)
2005-01-06, 9:32 PM #28
An awesome way to eat them, I find, is to boil up the noodles, drain the water out, then throw in some butter and the seasoning. Awesome.

I take it you have never ahd real ramen then. My friends in CA are Vietnamese and they make some good stuff. Ramen noodles bought seperately from the Vietnamese foods store they then put kimchi and a scrambled egg along with some leeks in it. Real good stuff.

I have not. My experience with authentic Asian food is limited to Chinese.

I'll have to try the egg thing. I'm going to end up living off of ramen noodles, mac and cheese and boil in a bag rice. I really can't cook, but I can bake really well. I'm pretty proud of my baking skills actually. but anything on the stove top that isn't the 3 aforementioned and I'm lost.
