If you click under Health and Science on the sidebar, you can find it. As for the article, that's quite interesting. It's strange how something that's used for something totally different can have such an effect.

The doctor looks like he could kill...

But this doesn't make much sense to me. Perhaps I don't know enough about viagra, but doesn't it focus the blood flow to the penis? If it increased blood flow as a whole, wouldn't it have some nasty side effects?

That's damn true! And it looks like he didn't win, either, if you have a look at his disappointed expression...

You know how some, actually most, drugs have side effects? Well, sometimes the side effect becomes the main effect. Viagra was actually, I believe, originally being researched as a treatment for high blood pressure. That would explain why they warn against people with low blood pressure taking the drug. Then somebody must have realized that viagra has an interesting little side effect. I'm assuming in this case the boy is taking it for a reason other than you primarily see the drug marketed for.

I don't know how much you know about anatomy so I'll assume you know nothing so that I don't leave out any important bits.

Arteries carry blood to tissues. Veins carry it to the heart. They're shaped like cylinders whose radius can be changed. If you increase the size of the cylinders (called "vasodilation") blood flow tends to increase and blood pressure drops. Viagra works by promoting vasodilation of blood vessels which increases blood flow and also drops the blood pressure. In the penis, blood can get in really quickly but it can get out as quick as the swelling tissue compresses the veins so the penis fills up with blood causing the erection.

The reason it works for this kid is that he has pulmonary hypertension (high blood pressure in the lungs). The viagra causes his blood vessels to dilate which drops his blood pressure and prevents him from dying.

NB: those of you wondering about how systemic drops in blood pressure can actually increase flow, then just take my word for it that the regulation of pressure and flow is a lot more complex than I've written above.

And for those of you wanting a technical reason: viagra works by inhibiting phosphodiesterase type 5 which promotes the breakdown of cGMP.
