Yeah, I hear you loud and clear. Upgrading a PC is NOT as easy as it sounds. It can be very unpredictable and every move you make can be worse than a chess move. Just when you think you have the right part, something that you might have overlooked shows up at the last moment and your forced to return the part. Even if you have the right part, you just never know if that part is defective, not compatible, or simply refuses to work with your computer, depite what logic would tell you.
I had recently upgraded my computer. Believe me, it was NOT a fun ride. At first, I bought a new video card, motherboard, and a CPU off the net. When I got the parts, I discovered that it only took DDR RAM, not SDRAM like the motherboard's advertisment said (arg!) so I was only able to put in the video card. Shortly after, my hard drive dies from old age (had it for over 2 years) so I replaced it with a new one. Another weeks passes and I finally get some DDR Ram from the same company over the net. When I plugged in all the parts, some sort of glitch with the video card and the motherboard corrupts the hard drive (I only had the hard drive for less than a week)! After two days worth of trying to reinstall my OS (which kept failing because the installation wouldn't complete! Arg!), I gave up on the motherboard and restored it back to the old motherboard (which forced me to restore it the old CPU and RAM as well). The hard drive is fine because it was the motherboard that was the problem. A while later, my moniter DIES from old age (had it for 7 years... no big surprise). I bought a new one later on and I returned the motherboard and ram back to the store (couldn't return the CPU because they won't accept RMAs for that). After about a week or two, I bought a new motherboard and a new video card (the other card seem to be unstable and I accused it of messing up the motherboard). My mother told me that I shouldn't open the new video card yet because I should return the other video card to the store first. Well, I installed the new motherboard into the computer as well as the other new parts that worked and the computer runs fine. It appears that other video card is fine on this system so the newer video card was returned to the store.
Well, that's the crazy story of how I upgraded my computer recently. Here is what the system is using now:
CPU: AMD Athlon XP 2500+ (FSB PC 333)
RAM: 512 DDR 3200 PC 333
Motherboard: SOYO KT600 Dragon PLUS
Moniter: KDS USA 19" CRT
Video Card: GeForce FX 5600 XT
