Good Co-op/ect multiplayer online games
2005-01-22, 10:15 AM #1
Greetings all,

I just wondered if anyone had some good co-operative games to reccomend. My friends and I have run out so far of such things to entertain ourselves with. Examples of games that we've played are Diablo (I & II), Starcraft (usu UMS or vs Comps), Sven Co-op, and Ragnarok. These were pretty much staples until we got sick of them. So yeah, any game that is a blast to play online, and you can play non-competetively some large fraction of the time as well. Even though most of them that we have played are RPGs, it would be nice to move away from that genre as well.

So, basic requirements are:
-Not subscriber based
-Has a decent co-op part
-On deh computor
-Maybe a genre other than "Hit thing, get EXP, so you can level up to hit bigger thing, and get a shiny helmet ect", AKA RPGs. Exceptions are is that if there is a REALLY good story.

Thanks for the help!

What's wrong with Far Cry?

Far Cry is an FPS that seems to not have that strong of a co-operative complement as far as I can garner from the reviews and other such materiel.

It's just not what I asked for. I asked for apples and I got oranges. I know you may like oranges, but dangit, I asked for apples.

Unless there is a mod that beefs up the multiplayer portion that is, but mentioning it would be nice.

Quote Gameranks:

"Far Cry has a competent multiplayer component, but the emphasis is squarely focused on the engaging single player campaign."

I noticed System Shock 2 has a co-op mode. I don't know how well it plays, though.

The second wave was kind of convincing...haha, Chile. That should've been a givaway.

It plays quite well. I highly recommend it.

Love it.

Brain Bread. It's a mod for Half-Life. It basically amounts to slaughtering never-ending waves of zombies while trying to accomplish different objectives. Pretty straight-forward, but still fun.

I suggest you get headsets, an audio conversation program (MSN's audio feature will suffice) and then play Warcraft III w/ expansion. Any team game using the arranged team system will suffice, and for the custom "UMS" type games, I highly suggest an All Random(AR) game of DotA (You can download the map/find info at http://www.dota-allstars.com) Don't play All Pick(AP), it's for newbs.

Lots of strategy, lots of fun.

If you have a copy of Doom or DoomII kicking around, install it then install Doom Legacy.

One of the best co-op experiences I've ever had, especially on alot of the later levels in both games.

Even better, install Doomsday or Vavoom (engine replacements) and use some hidef packs.

While co-op Doom is probably quite fun, it lacks some things that I think are essential for a truly wonderful co-op experience: slow or medium paced gameplay, and interaction between players. In a fast paced game where you're just running beside each other killing everything that moves and isn't a player, the gameplay isn't much better than single player.
Again, I highly recommend System Shock 2. It has the player interaction and medium-paced gameplay.

You were right in your assumptions of Far Cry.
But there is a Far Cry co-op mod. I haven't tried it myself, but from what I hear it just lets you play the single player with more players, which would be fantastic, because Far Crys single player is excellent.

I played through a few decks of System Shock 2 co-op with some friends at a LAN last year, and it was hella fun. One of the guys got slightly miffed when he was slaughtered by a monkey.

We will NEVER let him forget it.

Bite the bullet and pay for World of Warcraft. It's awesome fun running around questing with a few friends.

Hey, if I bite bullets, does that allow money to spontaneously flow into my account? If so, bring on the bullets!

So you can afford to purchase Far Cry and Half Life and Warcraft... How? :p

Touche!

However, all I'm gonna say to that is...

Yarr, hoist the misten-mast! Batten down the hatches! I'll make ye walk the plank! There be lootin' and a plunderin' ahead!

Man, pirates are sure funny, *cough, cough*

I MUST try out that Farcry Co-op mod... good god, that'd be ownage. Especially if you had a good team that worked well together.

I'm going to say Rainbow 6 games, DoD, and CS/CSS are some of the better team based games, but it all depends on it you and your team work well together on a personal level. Then you can have fun and everyone knows their job.

Hey, those monkeys aren't exactly harmless. Some of them shoot EXPLODING FIREBALLS.

But there were FOUR of us, and he was a Psi-guy. And he got killed by one of the little monkeys. How? We were all standing around and this monkey comes up behind him and just kills him... I'm the Hacker/Marine and I've got an AR (We all specialised in different things) with which I promptly splatter the monkeys brains across the bulkhead we just came through.

I swear, we were laughing for a good ten minutes. Next morning we got up and I had changed the guys desktop to the 12 Monkeys logo :D

The only game I play online these days, and thus the only game I can suggest, is Operation Flashpoint (OFP). And I always play COOP games. This game has a massive amount of addons and maps all over the net, also. And I bought the Game of the Year edition (containing Resistance, Red Hammer and Cold War Crisis) for just 10€. Of course this assumes you would like a somewhat realistic modern day FPS war game.
