Well, I'm new to counterstrike, and need some help gettting it running. I can't join any of the servers. So you know where I can download a patch or something.

Fristly, get Steam http://www.steampowered.com then install it and download CS through it. You just need to enter a valid cd key and you can play and half-life mods through it.

but I already have CS, why do I need to download it, and besides I'm on a dial-up.

I think he's just trying to make sure that you're running the latest version of CS. By downloading the version that's offered via Steam, you're guaranteed to have the latest version. If you go to the official CS website (www.counter-strike.net), they only offer the ability to download CS via Steam now.

I haven't played Counter-Strike for around a year, so I can't tell you the latest version, but if you'll snoop around their website, you can probably find out rather easily.

Online gaming is near-pointless on 56k. Even ancient games like CS are no fun over 56k.

Thanks guys I'm updating now, and btw, I play JA mp online fine, aswell as JO. Other games I can play online are WarCraft 3, StarCraft, and Neverwinter Nights.

I can play all these with no lag about %85-%90 of the time with no lag.

...There's no way you'd say that after playing on high speed for a couple of weeks.


Trust me, to be anywhere near decent in CS, you need to be at least under 120 ping.

I played Counter-Strike for a long time on a 56k. Half-Life's netcode is still one of the best for dial-up users (outside of Steam) and I was definately able to compete on servers with my 180 ping.

I highly recommend getting the non-steam version of Counter-Strike with a 56k.

I hated Steam, I couldn't stand it. I uninstalled it.

Well, you could buy Counter-Strike: Condition Zero which includes bot support and the latest version of Counter-Strike, a well as the uncompleted SP campaign that Ritual was developing before it got canceled. Good solution for a 56ker.
