I just salvaged an 8GB hard drive from an old comp my neighbor threw away. I spotted it this morning on the way to uni sticking out of my neighbour's trash can this morning (trash day), but i was late so I couldn't stop for it. I ran home and luckily, the trash hadn't been hauled away yet so I was able to salvage it.

I don't consider it stealing, b/c anything in a garbage can is logically up for grabs before it gets hauled away. Normally, i would never poke around in a garbage can, but any time I see a computer or any other electronics that look intact, i generally take a look. Who wouldn't?

It was an old Pentium 1, so there wasn't anything else really worth taking, but you can still do a lot with 8gb.

Post your salvage stories.

I'm debating about whether or not to take the whole thing and fix it if there's anything wrong with it.

It probably won't run windows all that well, but it should be sufficient (but not great) for a linux install.

Geeze, where do I start...

I used to have a motto; "One man's garbage is another man's tresure". I lived by it. Ive salvaged *soo* many things out of the trash, its not funny. Bikes, computers, tvs, you name it.

..But the best story, well, it didnt envolve trash. I was driving home from work one day a number of years ago, and I passed a yard sale. I spotted a computer. So, I pulled in and had a look. It was an old peice of crap, but it had a zip disk in it, and a cdrom, which I needed at the time, so I bought it. Payed 50 bucks for it.

Then I took it home.

I figured I boot it once before I stripped it clean, and hooked up the neccessary perifs. It booted bugger slow.

It was a p2-133. RUnning Win2k.

It took a good 5 minutes to boot. Then another 10 minutes to load all the TSRs and spyware this guy had running. Then I poked around.

It was glorious. This dude apparently ran some sort of construction contracting buisness, and all, *ALL* of his financial info was on this box. Bank account data, credit cards, ALL OF IT.

I hd a choice. I could, 1) rip the guy off real good, or 2) be a nice guy and wipe it clean... I chose to erase it all. I may be an evil SOB, but I wasnt going to screw the guy over...

So, I managed to snag the following:
1 3gb hdd
1 100mb zip drive
1 32x cdrom
1 floppy drive
assorted cables

..Then I sold the rest to a friend for 20 bucks. [http://forums.massassi.net/html/tongue.gif]

I used to believe that we must fight the future, lest change come without our consent. I was wrong. The truth is that we must embrace the future, for only with change can we remain the same.

the partitions are all screwed up-- so anything that was on there is virtually unretrievable.

Hehe, in my A+ Computers class at school, a friend of ours brought his computer to school so we could fix it.

His computer was a total piece of crap. 133 mhz processor, 8 GB hard drive, 56 Mbs of RAM, ya know.

Well, the motherboard was shot, but everything else was okay, and he could'nt put up any money for us to get him a new one, so we held onto it for him at school.

Time passed, and he forgot about it. He eventually moved away, leaving us the computer. I quickly snatched up the 8 GB hard drive, formatted it, and now I use it for all my songs. [http://forums.massassi.net/html/smile.gif]

AMD Duron 950MHz, Soyo mobo, 512mb RAM, all in an ATX case that an office we clean for was throwing out. Bad hard drive in it, and there was a post-it on the top that said BROKEN.

I love people who know NOTHING about computers. And they love me right back.

I found a case once. No HDD, knackered mobo, etc. It was a 133 Celeron. I have it in my room, 'cause it looks cool.
