Yeah, these are real. I watched a show about big cats that people bought as 'pets' and abandoned. There was a special zoo that picked them up and there were tons of different big cats.
There were some ligers, and they are very real. They are rare, because even though tigers and lions can interbreed (their offspring are sterile I believe) it doesn't happen in the wild generally. The ones on this show were a result of the semi-tame all living in an open pen together.
It was weird watching the woman go inside the pen/enclosure and sit down with this huge HUGE tiger and rub behind his ears.
They also had a large lion who was neutered early on, and as a result never grew a mane. He was massive though.
According to show, and judging by the footage this is correct, the ligers display both the complex social system of lions and the tigers love for water. (Tigers love to swim, I did not know that until this show.)
