Liger.

True? Hoax? Anyone know?

And before anyone starts with the biological definition of species (dumbly put, different species mating = impossible to produce fertile offspring), nobody said it was fertile.

I'm pretty sure I saw this on Fark a few months back. I'm fairly confident it isn't a fake. I mean, look at the Okapi. Something-and zebra mix. Or mules even. I'm sure it's possible.

We learned about ligers in bio class. They're real, and they're huge.

Theres two different cross-breeds of Lions and Tigers. If the mother was a tiger, it's called a Liger. If the mother was a lion, it's called a Tigon. Ligers are THE largest cats in the world.

Yeah, these are real. I watched a show about big cats that people bought as 'pets' and abandoned. There was a special zoo that picked them up and there were tons of different big cats.

There were some ligers, and they are very real. They are rare, because even though tigers and lions can interbreed (their offspring are sterile I believe) it doesn't happen in the wild generally. The ones on this show were a result of the semi-tame all living in an open pen together.

It was weird watching the woman go inside the pen/enclosure and sit down with this huge HUGE tiger and rub behind his ears.

They also had a large lion who was neutered early on, and as a result never grew a mane. He was massive though.

According to show, and judging by the footage this is correct, the ligers display both the complex social system of lions and the tigers love for water. (Tigers love to swim, I did not know that until this show.)

(Un)fortunuately these guys can't surivive in the wild too long. They're huge and need to consume a lot of meat to survive, and they're kinda slow making them yuck predators.

I think liger's are the real deal. Jackelopes on the other hand are a hoax.

And don't forget the huge beady bulking eyes.
Yeah.

Ligers have been around for awhile, I thought everyone knew about them.
2005-01-27, 1:16 AM #35
Apparantly it was highly likely that our ancestors mated with one of the other lineages of human-like primates to produce infertile offspring, I doubt they were as interesting as Ligers though.
