Full Metal Jacket

You know, as I sit here watching Full Metal Jacket, knowing that I love this movie, I have had an amazing revalation. This movie has no plot. It's just following these men through a series of events. The conflict is within the men. I think this is really quite amazing. There is no external conflict in the narrative... I mean obviously there is conflict... You know... It's Vietnam... but there is no "bad guy" in this movie. It's all about inner conflict, and I think that's really amazing stuff.

I dunno... post your thoughts or something...

This is my rifle, this is my gun!

This is for fighting, this is for fun!

M-I-C-K-E-Y M-O-U-S-E!

The first half of the movie was gold, the second was almost as good, but not equal. As a whole, the movie is very memorable, quoteable, and will stand the test of time.

Yeah good idea, Timewolf. Post your favorite lines.

"Hey, Photographer. Wanna take a good picture? Here man, take this. This, is my bro. This is his party. He's the guest of honor. Today is his birthday. I will never forget this day. The day I came to whey city and fought one million nva g**ks. I love the little commie bastards, man, I really do. These enemy grunts are as hard as slant-eyed drill instructors. These are great days we're livin' bros! We are jolly green giants, walking the earth, with guns! These people we wasted here today, are the finest human beings we will ever know. After we rotate back to the world we're gonna miss not havin' anyone around as we're shootin'."

My favorite part.

My favourite quote? Anything that came out of the mouth of Sgt. Hartman

The "bad guy" in the first half of the movie is the drill instructor, in a sense. He's the source of all the conflict while they are in boot camp. At the end of the movie, the "bad guy" is the sniper who killed a few of the marines.

Meh. War films rarely have a real story (in a conventional manner), they're more like character studies.

Saving Private Ryan for instance, doesn't really have a story. The whole let's-go-get-the-surviving-brother thing is just an excuse for the set-pieces. The closest thing to a villain I suppose is the Nazi at the end who kills a few of the main characters . I remember we were debating (or was it at TACC?) whether or not it was the same Nazi that was captured and released earlier on in the movie.

Platoon doesn't have a real story either, but Tom Berenger is definately the villain.

Platoon is sort of Dafoe versus Berringer... know what I mean?

Most of Full Metal Jacket was improv and ad-libbed... there really wasnt much of a set script for the actors to follow. There was a general outline for the movie, so they new what they had to accomplish in each scene, but other than that they were left to say pretty much whatever they wanted. This is probably one of the main reasons there is no overall storyline.

This quote is gold, and Molgrew has a point.
Looks like we're not going down after all, so nevermind.

That's pretty cool, in a sense that makes the acting a bit more realistic since it's less scripted right?

This movie sounds pretty good, but it's old right? So there is a chance that it's shown on TV?

Is that from the movie or is that something Family Guy made up?

Yes, it's frequently on the movie channels (ie. Encore and Starz!).

It picks up a lot after they graduate from bootcamp.

Cloud - They say that line as their marching along with their hands on their groins.

Some many great quotes from this movie, and mearly none of them are postable here.

"Anyone who runs is V.C. Anyone who stands still is well-disciplined V.C. "

Marines: [chanting] This is my rifle. There are many like it but this one is mine. My rifle is my best friend. It is my life. I must master it as I must master my life. Without me, my rifle is useless. Without my rifle I am useless. I must fire my rifle true. I must shoot straighter than my enemy, who is trying to kill me. I must shoot him before he shoots me. I will. Before God I swear this creed: my rifle and myself are defenders of my country, we are the masters of my enemy, we are the saviors of my life. So be it, until there is no enemy, but peace. Amen.

I think it actually gets boring after the bootcamp scene, but it was still interesting. Does anyone know the name of that song that they play during part of the vietnam scenes? One part during the song has a camera crew or something walking along sides of soldiers that are sitting down.

Or if it helps more it's the really fast-paced song. Frickin catchy. >_<
