Find range of your favorite radio station. (56k maybe)

I found this site, Radio Locator, while going through SA. It gives you information about a particular radio station. You can enter specific call letters or enter a city to list stations. If you're travelling, you can see how far you can go before your station craps out. Granted this isn't by any means 100% accurate. It will just give an estimate.

KOGO AM 600 - San Diego, CA

Enjoy.

That is the station I listen to 90% of the time I actually DO listen to the radio. Most of the other stations here play crap.

They have a lot of Brit stuff, but I couldn't find any maps.

I listen to BBC Radio 2, anyway.
Hey, Blue? I'm loving the things you do. From the very first time, the fight you fight for will always be mine.

This is neat, though MY radio usually cuts out around the purple line while driving down the freeway, not the blue. :(

You could try it anyway. Like everyone has said, those lines are not exact representations. Failing that, there's a link on the page that's a live stream from the station. Not the best quality, but it works. I have little need for it seeing as my Stereo is right behind me when I'm at the computer.

That thing is terribly outdated. For both of the popular radio stations back home, their old AM frequencies are the ones listed. That's been changed for at least 7-8 years.

WLW 700 AM. I used it because it's famous for its huge transmission range. (It used to be broadcasted at over 20x the power it is now. You originally could pick it up in England) It used to have one of the largest radio antennas in the world, until the FCC told them to turn it down, as per regulations that were being put together. Used to have a good signal nearly anywhere in the US, which is really cool :D

The map lies like no other. I've gone down to Florida on a clear night and listened to the Reds baseball game. (Not very clear, but I could at least hear what was going on.)

It's just typical scenarios of radio ranges. People have called from Virgina able to pick up AM 640 on their radios and it be KFI. Get really good conditions with ionosphere and AM waves will bounce all over the place.

radio k is an AM station run by students at the university of minnesota. it's not all sell-out-ey like most FM stations. so i dunno if AM gets a larger range or not just cause of the frequency?
2005-02-08, 4:16 PM #24
AM does travel longer than FM signals. AM hugs close to the ground. Also AM signals bounce off the ionosphere. So if you have good conditions, AM signals can bounce clear across the nation (see example above). Also AM signals aren't easily obstructed like FM ones.
