From what you can tell from the article, he might not have been able to.

When I hear stories like this, I just get so angry. Doing these hazing rituals, is so incredibly stupid, and look what it cost.

Wow. Horrific stuff.
I see what Freelancer's saying though. If he didn't even want to be part of it, why did he go along with the hazing?
Also, that article is quite badly written. It's way too dramatised.

I may drink and party but dammit, you'll never see me come anywhere near a frat. I hate them with a passion for their stupidity.

Pssh...frats. I'd rather spend the time there trying to pick up chicks.
DISCLAIMER: This is just armchair observation, not the result of many hours of deliberate study of the subject. I'm by no means an expert, but just an ignorant hick who's putting his two cents in. For that and a nickel, you can have a cup of coffee.

But they all carry a bad reputation just because they're frats, heh.

Regular parties can be bad, too. I went to a party once for some guy's birthday and they had a pinata there with condoms and candy in it. Now, this guy was wasted and I thought him swinging a bat around would be pretty dangerous. Of course, he didn't use a bat. Apparently, some idiot felt like they had to give this guy, totally wasted, a samurai sword to hit the freaking pinata with.

There will be plenty of time to consider that. The boys from Chi Tau knew there were problems when Matt collapsed and couldn't get up. There are still questions about just what happened then, but Butte County District Attorney Mike Ramsey says when the Chi Tau boys brought Carrington to the hospital, they never mentioned that he'd been drinking huge amounts of water in a hazing ritual. That is why doctors didn't know to treat him for water intoxication until it was too late.

"It makes me sick,'' says Smith. "They knew he was in trouble. They could have saved him.''

But they didn't.

Involuntary manslaughter, anyone?

Manslaughter is involuntary. And yes, they should be charged with it.

I agree. Even if they feel terrible for killing the guy, they should still be charged. They knew what they were doing when they were hazing him, so they should know that they'll be punished.

One of the many reasons frats and frat boys alike need to be banned.

The worst my friends' frats ever did was make them clean the house after the actives partied. I get the feeling that a number of the people here who hate frats do so simply because they've either had localized conflicts or have never personally known anyone in a frat.
the idiot is the person who follows the idiot and your not following me your insulting me your following the path of a idiot so that makes you the idiot - LC Tusken

Initiation here at my university was fun. There was the pub crawl, and random stupid activities (we duct-taped some people to walls, played base-ketball, emptied a bar in a small suburb), but nothing incredibly demeaning. As a bonus, I got to dress as a cop for a week. :p And the bar-emptying was fun. :D

But stuff like in the article... That's ridiculous. I hope they get charged for that. There was a hazing ritual at my old college. You could sign anyone up for it for $10. They called it the "****-hole" (trou de bouette). It was a pit filled with rotten food, rancid fast-food grease, and all sorts of vile bodily substances of the toilet kind. The people would first have to do a 2 litre beer-bong, run around a baseball bat, and then they'd get thrown into the pit, where they'd have to wrestle against the second-years, usually alone against 2 or 3. After everyone had gone through that, they'd all get lined up on the ground, face down, and get pelted with more rotten foods, mud, and other digusting things. Humiliation was what it was all about. The school got in some trouble last year when one student had gotten rotten celery shoved up his *** and wound up with an infection. Now the school forbids all initiations, except for the second day of classes, and the activities must be pre-approved.

What exactly is hazing?
2005-02-08, 2:00 PM #23
that indeed is ..well ugh.. what a way to ruin a bonding experience... it used to be that you carry books for someone, or do chores..stuff that causes you to spend time with the frat 'older' brohters... so you fit in well by the end of it..ugh
