You know, if you're gonna give a 16-word explanation for a two-word statement that might very well be offensive anyways, don't make the statement to begin with.

What's sad is I wonder how many members (myself included) counted that there actually were 16 words.
I can't think of anything to put here right now.

His right to speak does. They can't take that away.

Neither can they take away the moderator's right to censor said statement and/or punish said person.

Nothing is keeping you from setting up your own server, which you are allowed to use to say anything you want.

The way of divorcing is an old custom, dating back to the BC years in the region. It's not exclusive to Islam, it was a Judaic custom too.
Divorcing in that culture (I don't know the following is true today, but it was back then) had a different meaning back then. Women were unable to live on their own in that society, and were provided for in marriage. Once divorced, they were screwed.

This is the reason that Jesus spoke out against divorce. It had nothing to do with the way divorce is today, but he told people not to do it because if they did then the women they divorced would be out on the streets.

Except on private grounds, you can make up a ton of rules. Speech is included in that. If you went into a store and just constantly rambled for all eternity, and the manager decided to throw you out (Even if you weren't saying anything bad), he'd be in the right. His property, your problem.

I think I've jumped the gun a little, I'm afraid.
I've been digging around for a cite for this to make sure I was right. I haven't found exactly what I'm looking for. I think I misinterpreted what I heard.

I was partly right though. I found a few things:

It seems the author has an axe to grind against Judaism and Christianity, but it'll have to do for now.
from WOMEN IN ISLAM VERSUS WOMEN IN THE JUDAEO-CHRISTIAN TRADITION:
THE MYTH & THE REALITY

Quote:
Judaism, on the other hand, allows divorce even without any cause. The Old Testament gives the husband the right to divorce his wife even if he just dislikes her:

"If a man marries a woman who becomes displeasing to him because he finds something indecent about her, and he writes her a certificate of divorce, gives it to her and sends her from his house, and if after she leaves his house she becomes the wife of another man, and her second husband dislikes her and writes her a certificate of divorce, gives it to her and sends her from his house, or if he dies, then her first husband, who divorced her, is not allowed to marry her again after she has been defiled" (Deut. 24:1-4).

I should point out that when he says Judaism allows it, he is making a pretty big generalization about the religion and their interpretation. However, around the time of Jesus I do believe that this kind of thing was in Jewish law.

It looks like I was also wrong about that particular custom being behind this. A lot of the things that Islam is criticized for are cultural customs from that time that Christianity and Judaism participated in, but not this one.
However, what it apparently does say in the Koran nonetheless should be looked at.

From Legal Affairs
Quote:
The notion that a man is granted immediate divorce by saying "talaq" three times doesn't appear in the Koran. Divorce as described in the Koran requires three months of attempted reconciliation and arbitration before the couple can split. To divorce, the husband says talaq three times, but each of these talaqs must be separated by a month, and the first two are always revocable. Thus, in most Muslim countries, even the utterance of "talaq, talaq, talaq" is legally counted as a single renunciation that must be confirmed a month later and again a month after that.

Triple talaq first entered Islamic law when Umar, the second Caliph of Sunni Islam, a successor to the Prophet, learned that some husbands were using the threat of divorce as leverage against their wives. The caliph responded in 637 A.D. by making the triple talaq a valid, instant divorce. Doing so was his way of declaring, "Don't say it if you don't mean it."

So even though I was wrong about the connection to Islam, the way people say their divorce works is still wrong. I'll try to ask some people who might know, because I don't really trust these cites too much, but I think what I've found out is at least close to the truth.

Sorry about that. It just goes to show: always ask for a cite :)

I agree, that was cool. Brian jumped up a few notches in my view of him when I saw that! :D

I don't have any answers yet about divorce law, I'm still waiting on those. It does appear that either Mohammed wasn't influenced by Jewish law when it comes to divorce, or the interpretation of the law had changed by the time he was around, which is probable.
