They're now part of gamespy/fileplanet. Great.

Aw... crap.

3d gamers was my last bastion of free, easy downloads.

Q. Will 3D Gamers be redesigned into an IGN branded site?
A. No, the 3D Gamers brand and web site will continue to exist. IGN acquired them because of their strength and growth potential, and it wouldn’t make sense to destroy that value by drastically changing them. Because 3D Gamers has become part of the IGN network you may see references to their other sites, but the site will remain the 3D Gamers you know and (hopefully) love.

Q. Will registration or subscription be required for the web site?
A. No, we remain committed to keeping the site freely accessible. However, some optional features or services are likely to be added in the future that may require registration or subscription. We would have explored those options sooner or later anyway, regardless of the acquisition by IGN, but the main features of the site will remain free.

Q. Will our downloads continue to be free?
A. Yes.
It's bad, but not that bad.

As long as they keep their torrents ready and available I don't think I'll mind... much
If it breaks, you get to keep both pieces.

There's still File Mirrors.

I hate Game Spy. I don't even use their awful server browser anymore. After the "2.0" update, the text and formating was completely messed up. It wasn't worth trying to fix, and it was probably loaded with spyware anyway, so I ditched it.

Fileplanet just sucks. That's all there is to it.

I prefer straight ftp or http links, as I'm sure everyone else does.

I don't like waiting in line for an hour, only to wait another hour til the download is done. FilePlanet needs to be hit with a massive http virus, then maybe they'll see how many people would stick around when forced to find another source of downloading.

Oh oh, http virus? Sure thing matey. On second thoughts... maybe I shouldn't.

I used Gamespy once.

It lasted about 10 minutes.
I can't think of anything to put here right now.

I used Fileplanet ONCE. That was to get the massive Source engine/HL2 gameplay video. I already hated it, and after getting that, I firmly decided never to set foot on that site again.

As long as they don't change their download methods. That is/ was a great site for downloads.

Yep. Emphasis on the EASY part, too. Gamespy/Fileplanet must die - it seriously sucks. Maybe it's trying to become the EA of the game download niche (read: monopply).

Brian and I have many long term grudges against Gamespy Industries. Those bastards do not play fairly at all.

That said, it is very sad to see any company become part of this monolith of evil. I personally cried for .25 seconds when Gamespy bought IGN.
