4-year-old killed by lawn mower

I hate stupid, stupid articles like this. He was not killed by a lawn mower! He was killed by his baby sitter's husband. There is a huge difference. It's just like all these articles where you see, "an elderly man was hit and killed by an SUV today" - no, it wasn't the SUV, it was the DRIVER of the SUV. This kind of stuff shifts the blame to an inanimate object and it really pisses me off.

Well it was the lawnmower that did the killing yet again it was the driver who was driving it. I think both are to blame.

eh how exactly is the lawnmower to blame? [http://forums.massassi.net/html/confused.gif]

To be fair Brian, it does say right underneath

They're only trying to get a catchy headline.

That's my point. Instead of telling the outright truth in the headline, they try to make it sound more catchy. I specifically clicked it because I figured the lawnmower came to life on it's own, killed someone, washed itself off, and put itself back in the garage. Imagine my disappointment [http://forums.massassi.net/html/frown.gif]

The death of this child is hardly anyones fault machanical fallure + inexsperienced operator + someone not watching the kid = accident... it may very well be someones fault... but alot of things contributed.

I don't really see what the big deal is... I mean, by reading the title you can assume that the lawnmower was being driven by a person. "4-year-old killed by lawn mower that was being driven by his babysitter's husband" is too long for a title and "4-year-old killed by man" implies that the boy was purposefully murdered. It's about brevity, not shifting blame. The headline gives you a general idea of what happened (a child has been run over with a lawnmower) and the article then gives the details (who, what, how, where, when, why).

And when someone is shot, it's the gun's fault, because the gun did the killing but the person holding it shot it. They are both to blame.

Yeah, no. See, if you're using a riding lawn mower, you NEED to be aware of your surroundings. You need to know where your kids and pets are. You should have gone through the lawn ahead of time to make sure there weren't horse shoes or toys or heaven forbid: dog poop. You don't want to be kicking that stuff up.

When you are riding, you need to constantly be watching to make sure there aren't things around you. Yes, accidents can happen, but what he describes ("I was fiddling with the clutch, rolled backwards, and felt a bump.") is a bit too contrived. I mean come on!

You also need to constantly tell your kids (and those you are baby sitting) not to go into the yard when it's being mowed. Rider mowers aren't toys and should be taken seriously. I was taught all this when I was a kid (and hell, we never even HAD a rider mower!), and if the babysitters or parents don't pass this information along, it's THEIR fault the kid died. Whether or not the legal system agrees with me is probably debateable, but it's still their fault.

Uh, but he was killed by the lawnmower. And the man in your example was hit and killed by the SUV. If you want to get technical about it, the headline is technically correct. I think it's pretty obvious there was a human in control who caused the machines to kill, but the machine was the direct cause for the death. If every headline went by who's fault it was, they'd ALL be "Man killed by man!!" "Man killed by kid!" "Kid killed by woman!" DUH. It's not like you would see that artical and go "OMG, there was a MAN driving it?! I didn't expect that at all! I really thought it would have been a cougor or something a little more vicious..."

The headline is inaccurate anyway. It was the BLADE of the lawnmower that killed the 4-year-old. Not the whole thing.
2004-04-23, 10:47 AM #22
This is the kind of crap makes more stuff have to have 'safety things' on them. Accidents happen. We need to deal with it. And 4-year-old kids die everyday. All kinds of people die everyday. We cant prevent it.

The kid could have been killed with a weed-whacker and we'd still know there was a person behind it. Headlines are meant to be short and to the point to draw your attention. It's the job of the ARTICLE to provide the details.

When I was very young, my mom accadently hit me in the head with a vacuum cleaner and I had to get stitches. Now, if someone asks me where the scar on my forehead came from, I don't say "Well my mom hit me." No, I say "I was hit in the head with a vacuum cleaner." And unless I continue the story, I don't tell them WHO hit me, WHY they hit me, or what kind of vacuum cleaner it was. If they want to know that, then they'll ask. "Oh, how'd that happen!" Then once I see the person is interested, I'll provide the details.

When I first saw it, I didn't think they meant one of the sit-on ones. I thought it was one of the ones you pusk while standing up... and if it was, how the hell can you kill someone with it accidentally? Anyway, they shoulda been more careful. A hell of a lot more careful, like possibly got off if there was a problem.

No, because from the statement "I was hit in the head with a vacuum cleaner" implies that there was SOMEONE to hit me with it. Therefore, from that statement, you already know somebody hit me, AND you know what they hit me with. Therefore, the statement "My mom hit me" is more vague, because they may know somebody hit me, but they don't know what she hit me with. [http://forums.massassi.net/html/wink.gif]

Oh, and basically everything I've said in this thread could have been summed up in "I agree with Wuss" had I been smart and read all the replies before responding. [http://forums.massassi.net/html/tongue.gif]

Dude, if something that small pisses you off that much, you need to get some fresh air or something... Its not a big deal. Think of it this way, by clicking on a stupid article heading, you gain more knowledge by readin the article. As a matter of fact, its THEIR site and they're not forcing you to go on their it or anything.

Take a chill pill.
