suppose you went into a museum (doesn't matter which one) and were allowed to take and keep one item. What would you choose and why?

I would personally like to own the Spear of Destiny, located on display in the House of Habsburg's treasure house in Austria.

I heard about this interesting relic a few years ago, and I've always wated to see it ever since. According to legend, this is the very same Roman-era spearhead that pierced the side of Christ at the crucifixion, and whoever owns it allegedly has the power to rule the world, but if you lose possession of the spear, you will lose your throne and your life. (that is, if you manage to use the spear to rise to power) People like Charlemange, Constantine, and Hitler (and many others) have all owned the spear, and were reported to believe in the legend and called on any special properties the spear may have.

Whether you believe in the legend of the spear or not is irrelevant--- it is still an extraordinary item and has a very rich history.

I can't think of anything original, so I'll say the sarcophafsoasdhfdsaiasd of King Tut, because it's probably worth some serious cash.

Bah. Your spear of longinus is no match for my hand of midas.

A real, genuine katana. That's all I would want from a museum...

Not only that, but the Spear of Destiny is what the expansion pack for Wolfenstein 3D was based around.

Great thread idea, and fascinating choice, Page.

Unfortunately I'm hugely uncultured and can't think of anything.

Bad Idea.

You'd have to shell out ALOT of money for the climate control system for it.

You see, it's painted on a thin piece of wood. And paintings like that need to have their climate be as consistent as possible.

And even then, it's STILL warping.

Personally, I'd like to own "The Scream."

Too bad someone stole it at gun point like a year ago.

I'd say something to do with ancient egypt, like a ZPM or a Goa'uld hand device... what?

Hmmmm...

I'd probably want to look at some old musical instruments, maybe a horn or a bugle from when back in the castle times. :p

Jesus, I'm really uncultured as well. :(

The Peat Bog Man from the British Museum. I could totally put him in my front yard to scare people off.

Or the painting of Chronus eating the baby by the Spanish artist... forgot his name. The guy that went crazy towards the end of his life.

Francisco Goya?

Since I really don't give a crap about antiques, I'd take whichever piece is worth the most and resell it as soon as I could.
The music industry is a cruel and shallow money trench where thieves and pimps run free, and good men die like dogs. There's also a negative side.

I saw the Mona Lisa, it wasn't very impressive. I would like one of the mural paintings from the Louvre though. One of the paintings in the floor-to-ceiling paintings hall. Those were amazing.

One of William Blake's illuminated books. Unfortunately, I'm pretty sure most of them are in private collections, not museums.
