My Life & Massassi
2005-02-10, 4:55 PM #1
Just wanted to give a heads-up on what's going on over here. I promised everyone a new server and an open-source version of the Massassi2 back-end software sometime around the first of the year. I was planning on getting started with that in February, but things are looking to be pushed into March. Here's the deal:

I put an offer in on a house in January and since then it's been a literal flood of paperwork. They accepted the offer and getting everything together has proven to be a real pain - since I'm considered "self-employed" by the government, I am responsible for paying my own taxes, plus self-employment tax (2x the amount "normal" people pay). On the plus side I am also able to claim many of my related expenses as business expenses. So I get a lot more freedom and pay quite a bit more in taxes, but it's a huge pain because I have to pay a damn accountant to do up all the paperwork. Luckily I had saved all my receipts for 2004 so I got quite a few write-offs.

Anyway, the house is closing on Tuesday (at that point I have to have about $2500 for the freaking "closing costs" which is altogether BOGUS). That cost in addition to the huge amount I owe on taxes for 2004 plus new applicances and carpet in th enew house has left me strapped for cash. Not in a way that leaves me homeless or starving or anything, just short enough that I don't have the dough to be dropping $200 on a dedicated server right away.

So the plan is towards the beginning of March to buy the new server and start moving stuff over. Once things are moved over to the new server I will install a CVS repository there and give qualified individuals write-access to it.

Thanks for your patience, don't worry, Massassi will move forward. Maybe at the pace of a snail but we do try ;)

Good luck with the house.

Have you signed all the paperwork yet? If not, just wait. Takes about an hour of just signing your name before your all done. :p

So far as I can tell, your busy and wanting to do something with Massassi, but since I have no idea what a CVS repository is, I'll just say good luck with everything.
Life is beautiful.

pssh. massassi doesn't need to move forward. look how long we kept the oldnew forums going for. through the random crashes from postage overloading and all that stuff...

aaaaaaaaanyway. Yeah, thanks for letting us know, and congrats on the house, I think you are now really officially a grown up.

Off in the distance, a loud *clunk smash 'damnit my joystick fell off the shelf again!'* is heard. Followed by a *'Oh no! I tripped over the mess of cords that is the massassi server and am about to land on the joystick!'*. Then a sickening sound that is someone being impaled on a Wingman sounds, and a wail of terror. *'Ah I got impaled on my joystick! *die*'*

Thanks Brian.

Oh, and for those of us without experience in PHP/Perl etc, can we get read-only access so we can look at the code and learn? Learning web scripting languages is a major goal for the summer.

Yeah, I'd like to be able to look at the code at least. It'd be an interesting read :D

Too bad I suck at PHP, I'm a pure HTML + CSS design guy, not a backend guy. Ask MZZT, my php scripts are pitiful :D

Good lord, it still baffles me how completely selfless you are, Brian.

You know that if you asked you could find 100 people around here who would totally donate $2 or something to help the site, but of course you'd never do that...

I toally respect you, but you know, asking for help from people who are more than willing to provide isn't any less respectable. It's not like 95% of us have to pay for houses or anything, most of us are just sitting around mooching of your income to run this place for us.

JK's pretty much dead, but I'm still posting here. Such an odd bean I am.

However, good luck mr. Lozier. With... something.

Indeed. Thanks for the heads up Bri. Where *did* the donate idea go?
