'Tis a sad series of events...

The problem is that the SotD info wasnt stored in a database, it was all just written permanently to the files. So the information about each screenshot is gone for good, unless someone has a backup of the files.

I indexed all of the images, in case anyone still wants to browse through them all:

It's actually really interesting to look through them, to see the progression of the community. It's still pretty amazing what people did with JK.

YOU JUST MADE MY FREAKING DAY. I can make a screen scraper in perl in about 20 minutes to go grab all the captions and rebuild the SOTD. I totally forgot about that. I'm going to do it tomorrow if I can find the time. THANKS!!!

It looks like they archived only up to 2003-12-22 so we're still missing all of 2004. That sucks

I have a backup locally that has all the SOTDs and captions up to 2004-04-27.jpg. Anyone have a later backup?

Better than nothing. That's still 4 years.

The last SOTD was mine, and it was also my first SOTD. That means that this is all my fault

So, SOTDs after 2004-04-27 have missing captions and such? I think we can fill them in. Many of the SOTDs are easy to recognize. (I guess)

You would think the authors at least would recognize them. Brian could make a sticky thread for a while, with links to the pictures of missing captions. People could check them, and identify their own products. Or some thumbnail gallery with id numbers would be even better.

I've got a poopload of SotD's that I did, but no dates for any of them. I'll orginize them by date, make a word file of which ones were last edited on which dates, rename them, than upload them. If this gets my SotD back, I'll be greatful.

What did happen to that level? I would really like to know.......

His computer crashed... he had it sent to a data recovery specialist to try and recover Nar, but the guy wasnt able to. He did start working on it again from scratch, as evidenced by this sotd, but I dont think he's touched it in a while.
