So...Ann Coulter
2005-02-11, 8:00 PM #1
Okay, if you've come in this thread, you probably know what I'm going to talk about. Ann Coulter, and why I hate her.

So I walk into a book store in the mall the other day (Waldenbooks) intent on finding Survivor by Chuck Palahniuk which, last I checked, they refused to order because it wasn't considered proper...or something. A year later I'm in the store looking for it. Before I find it, I see the political section, and think "Political...hey, America the Book!"

So being the Curious George that I am, I walk into the small, but rather diverse aisle, and pick up said America the Book. I read a few pages, realize my money is not enough to purchase said book, and sadly place it back on the shelf. Then I look over at a book, so wonderfully titled, Treason. Not thinking much about it, I pick it up, and open the book. Now I'd heard about the lady, but never really...had much experience with her 'interesting' point of view.

So about a sentence in, I realize that this book is very, very anti-liberal. About a paragraph in, I realize it's all bigoted and lousy bull****. About 3 paragraphs in, I put the book down, and promise that if I ever see her, I will promptly kill her, with my bare hands if I must.

I hate extremists. At both ends of the spectrum. I hate extremists because they destroy any validity your opinion may have/have had. I hate extremists because they're so absolutely annoying, you can barely contain yourself from taking a shotgun and putting it to their temple in some point-blank target exercises. I hate extremists because they make the most biased claims ever.

And this isn't limited to conservatives. Oh, no, I have my hatred of liberal extremists too. Some of the people at my school who are liberal criticize Bush...far...far...too closely. I mean, they're still my friends...but wow. They blame him for the most ludicrous of things (even hinting that he created the tsunami on Dec. 26th). Why? Because they don't like him. And being liberal is 'cool'.

I hate people who take what I believe in, and rape it until its something unrecognizable, and that you wouldn't want to be seen standing next to in the subway.

What do you hate (preferrably, politically)?

The fact that they all never really answer questions posed to them. This is of course, partly the Media's fault as well. They don't press for an answer like they should, thus the politicians slack off and don't bother to give one.

Wow, Bush created the tsunami? Haven't heard that one. I agree though, extremists from either side bother me a great deal. But, they've got their right to hold their opinion and express it too, so, oh well.
Life is beautiful.
2005-02-11, 8:14 PM #4
IMO it's just as likely that Bush created it as it is that God created it. And I've witnessed my fair share of people claim that God was punishing the victims of the tsunami for not being Christian. So, in conclusion, that would be like a 0.0000000000000000000000001% chance for both events. I hate people who claim that god creates these disasters for some petty purpose.

I hate politics in general. It's so moronic now days. No one actually debates. At best it's a bunch of sound bytes and generalizations. Usually it's a bunch of morons shouting Ad Hominum attacks at each other and throwing around preposterous factoids that any one with an once of objectivity could see were greatly exaggerated or false. I wish William F. Buckley still did his shows.

Pissed Off?

I agree with you, Yosh. Extremists suck because you can't even debte them. They spew thier side then comepletely shut down because they aren't willing to listen to anything that contradicts their views.

Oh, and laugh at their stupidity rather than getting mad. You'll live longer. ;)

Woah, Yoshi. Calm down.
I have no love for Ann Coulter, but don't you see the absurdity of denouncing her as an extremist and saying you want to kill her?

She's not worth it, trust me.
Watch this, it'll make you feel better. She gets owned on Canadian TV.

I hope this thread doesn't turn into a trainwreck. I remember in the last thread about her, someone was clearly trolling. He should have been banned, IMO.

Have your heard her lately? Even for me, she takes it a little too far. She's still not as bad as Micheal Savage. That guy is waaaaay out in right field.

she is just entertainment the way i see it. i dont beleive someone can be that right wing and that extreme and still be that popular in the public eye.. im a conspiracy theorist but im pretty sure her whole act is along term way of pissing off liberal people to show off their bad side, convincing some really few stupid-straight-forward-conservatives into believign waht she says, and thats it. there is no HARM coming to the normal right wingers by her existance. infact.she makes bush look lie hes crazy reform liberal.a nd she makes gore look like a hippy. and sinec (i'm not sure on this at all) i get the feelin that hses not in any position of great power, no one cares about what she says coz she cant actually act wide-scale on what she says. tahts why i think shes a big hoaxy act. she never has to prove her sincereness of bein that right wing, by like say..deporting thousands of brown people out of US, coz 'she doesnt ahve that authority'. lah dee da. its an act i think. i oculd be totally wrong on that...tbw..does she have any power? englighten me.. i have big opinions on someone i barely know but i have heard her interviews and read some of her stuff and ..wow... me reasoning wiht my mom to stay up till 10 when i was 11 years old was a lot more fact-based than her stuff.

Oh, trust me, I think she's way out there too. That doesn't justify violence against her.

Nope, Savage is much, much worse. There's a reason his show is referred to as 'hate radio'. Coulter never said anything as bad as this:
From http://www.usatoday.com/life/television/news/2003-07-07-msnbc-fires-savage_x.htm
Quote:
The incident that resulted in his firing began innocently enough. Savage was taking viewer phone calls about airline horror stories, and a male caller began talking about smoking in the bathroom.

"Half an hour into the flight, I need to suggest that Don and Mike take your ..." the caller said, before he was cut off and his words became unintelligible.

"So you're one of those sodomists. Are you a sodomite?" Savage asked.

The caller replied: "Yes, I am."

"Oh, you're one of the sodomites," Savage said. "You should only get AIDS and die, you pig. How's that? Why don't you see if you can sue me, you pig. You got nothing better than to put me down, you piece of garbage. You have got nothing to do today, go eat a sausage and choke on it."

Okay, putting down one guy because he's gay, or informing an entire country that they are lucky to exist.

Yeah, sorry if I think the latter's worse.

While the latter attacks a larger number of people, I think the former is worse because it's much more personal and full of malice.

I lean towards froggie there. The "lucky to exist" comment is directed towards a large body of people, you won't know them 1:1. The aforementioned attack on gay man, that was 1:1 and really personal. He lambasted that guy.

Savage is...an oddjob. I do not know how he stays on KFMB AM (local San Diego station).

Canada didn't send troops to Vietnam, yet there were Canadians who fought in Vietnam. Canadians also served in the American forces during both World Wars as well as the Korean War. 35,000 Americans joined the Canadian Army during WWI, because the United States remained neutral for so long.

The moral of the story is that Canada wasn't there, but Canadians were. While she's technically wrong, it could be argued that this is what Coulter meant. Either way, her point remains somewhat valid (about Canadians and Americans traditionally being close allies).

Personally, I can tolerate Coulter about as much as I can tolerate Kennedy. I find politics to be a bore, and I'd be happy living on my own island where there is no CNN, Fox News, or CNC.

Coulter's an entertainer. Preaches to the choir. I've accepted the fact that she is there to entertain conservatives and not trying to persuade others. Plus, she's usually right.

I actually wasn't referring to any specific comments but if you want me to address the quotes in maevie's (can somebody help me with what the pronunciation of that is supposed to be? I think I have it but I'm curious) post, I will.

What is wrong with going to war over oil? Seems like that could be a legitimate reason given certain circumstances. The second one of hers is a bit harder. I didn't check the link maevie provided but I doubt it quoted Coulter's entire column. I do know that it ran on Sep. 13, 2001 and that she had lost a friend, I want to say Barbara Olsen, in the attacks and much of it was reactionary. With that being said, I don't like her comment about converting to Christianity however I don't have any problem with the rest of that quote.

I find it doubtful that everytime I've commented on this site I've expressed an ideological opinion but be that as it may, I've made it clear that I think she's usually right about what she discusses. I can't help it if some of you only want to concentrate on some inflamatory quotes of hers.

I'll need you to clarify your edit. It's a statement when I believe you are trying to ask me something.

Regarding the first part, sure, I'll briefly elaborate. I think it is fair to say that oil is a fundamentally vital resource worldwide. Now, if you have the relatively limited areas of production start to use purposely resricted access to the supply to the detriment of the rest of the world then you have a valid reason to go to war. Because the fact is that oil producers can use the supply as a weapon by cutting it off. Now that certainly isn't going on now and it certainly wasn't a factor in the Kuwait invasion. Again, this was meant to be brief but I think you can understand the concepts of what I think would be valid "oil war" reasons.
