Windows/linux partitioning help

(Don't know whether this should be in the tech forum, but I'm posting it here first b/c this forum gets more exposure. anyway...)

Windows XP chose an opportune time to go out on me, and i'm planning to do a reinstall today. Now is probably the best time to load windows as well as install knoppix to the hard disk.

Since i doubt that fdisk can create a usable linux partition, I'll probably have to do it from within knoppix. Since my HD is basically blank right now, I can still run knoppix in all its glory by running if off of a cd. During my last linux session, I saw something called Kparted, which looks like a partitioning program.

How do i use it? Windows and linux use pathnames differently, so I'm confused. Partitioning is tricky, so i don't want to experiment with this, I want to get it right the first time.

So, how should i go about doing this? should i instal llinux first, or install windows and then do linux? (after making the partitions in linux) For some reason, my copy of winxp only works correctly if you install win98 first and upgrade from there, so I was not sure if win98 would copy over my linux partition and screw everything up.

please advise.

Since you are starting over with a harddrive that has no partitions. Use FDISK to create the windows partition and install windows. Then use your linux distro of choice, (Mine is currently Suse 9.0 Professional), you should be able to create the linux partitions during the install of linux.

When you HD install knoppix, it will have you partition it within setup.

What I would do, is install XP first, but leave enough space to create a linux partition and a swap partition. Windows has a nasty habbit of replacing grub/lilo with the MS boot loader. [http://forums.massassi.net/html/tongue.gif]

You know, if peple would post these threads in the tech forum in the first place, a lot more people would visit and you'd get more "exposure" there. :P
