But gasoline goes off in a combustion reaction, which requires oxygen, and isn't nearly as destructive. Nitro is a self-contained explosion, since the molecue contains it's own oxygen which is liberated in the explosion, along with a lot of gases that create the explosive force itself.

The point of using a molotov is to burn something down, not destroying something outright like nitro would.

When a molotov is lit (and hopefully thrown) The force of the exploding gasoline breaks the bottle, and hurls burning gasoline everywhere. It can start a huge fire in minutes.
