That was... awesome! I hate rap and religion individually, but collectively, something just clicks.

When people start yelling stuff like that and it has no real tonal value, that's rap.

Not to start an argument, but you don't know what your talking about... Since when was good non mainstream rap been about yelling things?

Also, rap is about lyricism, not chords etc.

When people start arguing over a definition, they aren't truly arguing over anything. Definitions in and of themselves don't mean anything.

Honestly, who the hell cares about useless music classifications? You're right about one thing: I don't know what the hell I'm talking about when it comes to music classification. The endless bickering and fights caused by music taxonomy baffles me. TO ME, it's rap. Perhaps I should have been a little more clear by stating, "I don't usually like this kind of music, whatever the hell it is, ..." I can't stand when people jump on each others' cases because someone got some classification wrong that was nebulous to begin with. Just lay off. I don't want to be an enabler in this bickering. Music isn't that important to me.

Even though this is rap, that's absurd.

Sol, do you realize that this is a parody of "Baby Got Back" by Sir Mix-a-Lot?

Er, poetry is about lyricism. Any self proclaimed form of music is about cords. The lyrics are meant to accompany the music.

Rap is rudimentary poetry with background...er music? That is, if you can call it music. It to is often extremly rudimentary. There are no cord progressions. There is no set tempo (that is stricly adhered to). It's just a few different rythems played over and over again with no melody or harmony. It truly lacks all of the fundamentals of music. So, a better name for it is rythemic background.

So, to summarize, rap is rudimentary poetry with a rythemic background of some type. Not music (at least nothing past a very rudimentary level).

Note: This post isn't intended to ignite an argument, but instead to simply put forth a view (with evidence to support it) to inspire reflective thought as to rather rap is really music or not. Ultimately, it comes down to your own personal view point of what you consider worthy of the title music. Rather you go strickly by definition or by a set of guidelines and rules that describe the components of music.

1 definition of music: " Vocal or instrumental sounds possessing a degree of melody, harmony, or rhythm."

All of this is in rap, why can't it be music?

In rap its the "beat" that compliments the lyrics, unlike many other forms of music.
I listen to rap becuase of the clever wordplay, metaphors, the message, freestyles etc. To me, this a type of music. I hardly agree that its "rudimentary poetry" however, why would you think that? Most of the artists I listen to spit some of the craziests rhymes in which you would never find (to my knowledge) in any other form of music.

I agree with Sol here. Most of you that don't call it music have probably never listened to more than one or two rap songs all the way through, if that. I haven't myself, but I'm not elitist and stupid enough to seriously call rap "urban poetry" as fun as it may be at times.
