Well, I rented it last night and I must say I am impressed. It's right up there in good movies with LOTR:ROTK, POTC, and Finding Nemo (Gotta admit it was an amazing movie...c'mon)

There were mixed impressions, some say that it was boring and dull, others that it was better than ROTK. I decided to make my own opinion.

ROTK is a pretty damn good movie. But if it wasn't a sequel that finished a story, and was it's own movie, MAC would be a lot better. Loved the little one arm kid [http://forums.massassi.net/html/biggrin.gif] what a badass at that one part.

I really liked it. The middle section was a tad too slow in parts (the subplot concerining one of the officers could have been trimmed) but it's a minor complaint. Paul Bettany and Crowe were wonderful together, again, and I was surprised Bettany didn't get nominated.

I liked it, for the most part it wasn't exactly exciting, but it was quite interesting.

I really liked it when i saw it in my theater, and am planing to rent it soon. the sea battles are awesome, but yah, it's a bit slow in the middle. also, there was a tad too much tragedy, IMO, but that may jsut be me.

For some reason I thought it was terrible. It seemed way to strung out and repetitive to me, and the end was very anti-climatic. Just my opinion though.

I don't know how many of you have gone sailing on a larger vessel, our class crewed a schooner around the Baltic Archipelago for a week, but this film, along with Das Boot are prime examples of capturing what sailing is like. It takes a while to get from place to place, you're stuck with the same people, hour after hour, news spreads fast. That horrible feeling of having to pull kitchen duty in the galley while the ship is being rocked by waves that crash at the bow, spraying eveyone on deck.

I doubt that Napoleon-era frigate crews saw combat day in day out. Anyone who's read C.S. Forester's Hornblower series can enjoy the film for it's merits. I think they just marketed it wrong, as a non stop action swashbuckling Pirates of the Carribbean type film. Personally, I enjoyed this more than Pirates.

It was unspectacular, and I find that that's a good thing. No campy Wagner-esque orchestration during action scenes, no "money shots" (Oooo. Let's follow the path of this cannonball as it arcs across ands slams through the hulls in cheap CGI!), relying more on the strength of the acting and direction to pull through successfully. Y'know what this means? It means that it actually won't look dated when you watch it again in 15 years.

I rented it for free, and I'm glad because I would have never paid for it.

To be honest? Well, first off... Napoleon-era naval movies really aren't my thing. I'd like to list off a few similar movies that I didn't like, but to be frank this was a genre maker (and breaker) for me.

It's an unbearably slow movie. While the science-history nut in me did appreciate the whole Galapogos Island subplot, the omg-huge-ship-go-boomie nut in me reviled the majority of the film. I have to say, I've watched all three LotR movies in a row before, and this movie felt even longer. It's not my kind of movie at all.

Yes it was pretty slow and boring imo - it may have been like that.. but then that doesn't make it a good film.

slow? what the crap are you talking about
obviously your minds can't follow the plot.

i'll admit the ending of the film wasn't very climactic... but the climax of the major chase-plot was earlier in the film.

but that's okay because the end (climax) of one major subplot was at the end.

you can't look at a film from such a linear perspective.
try watching some euro or asian films some time. if you thought this was boring you'll never understand the circular intertwining plots of those films.

(Just my $0.02)

No, I followed the plot. It just developed very very slowly.

It had good acting, directing, special effects and pretty much everything, but... when you come right down to it... it was a very drawn out movie. I laugh with derision at your claim that I couldn't follow it because I'm stupid.

I loved it. I don't know how people can call it slow. Meh. Each for his own I suppose.

I thought it was good, but I mainly didn't get into it as much as Pirates of the Carribean. I do agree with what one of you mentioned about the film not being overzealously in CG or "money shots".

I loved this film. I hope they make a sequel, or something similar.
