I don't know if this is old news or not but..

"--The FBI is trying to convince the government to mandate that providers of broadband, Internet telephony, and instant-messaging services build in backdoors for easy wiretapping.

all I can say is lol,I wonder if they think hackers will just pretend that the backdoors arn't there..
2004-04-24, 10:11 AM #2
I wonder if they think that they can force this on older protocols, like IRC (which I'm guessing most hackers use). And I wonder how they think they could accomplish it.

Also, this doesnt really help them any if you're using a good encryption on your messages...

If it happens, you watch. Within at least a year someone will have a way to disable/block/or trick the backdoor.

one big problem with that, they could also spend time tracking someone until it turns out they live in a different contry where the law still protects them, or they could face the problem of people deliberately talking about nukes and sending uranium to tick off the FBI.

Have you ever heard of Echylon-Tempest? The FBI is already monitoring international phonecalls, faxes and emails, and that hasn't been a problem yet. Besides, I don't think ticking off the FBI would be worth the jailtime and/or fines associated with it.

I meant by doing something that could trick the FBI that is perfectly legal such as doing a performance for people like a mock weapons deal that could be for a game that is being played over the internet. They could show the game logs and prove that the FBI was just very paranoid and jumped to a conclusion. It would be a good idea as it would show exactly how those operaters choose who to moniter.

Also, why the hell would people do things like actual weapons trade over a public internet provider?

That's the NSA (National Security Agency). They're the ones who try to get a fix on terorists through cell phone calls and the like, among many other things.

Echelon monitors mostly international communication. Allegedly they tried to use it on internet communication but the high volume of traffic crashed the system fairly quickly. I'm sure they could have developed a better way to do it by now though.

If tempest is the name, I believe that's the one where they can theoretically get a picture of your computer monitor, or TV, etc and by other means monitor your actual movements. May have had something to do with satelites at some level.

I'm not really worried about it, my life ain't that interesting to arouse their suspicions ... we'll see where they're going with it.

Would this affect Linux users as well?

I doubt it, b/c someone that knows how could write a program to block it.

The sad thing is, since the people we have in Congress seemingly don't know what they are talking about when it comes to computers, this might actually get passed.

or something of that nature.

anyway, stupid, stupid move by the FBI. This will make them look horribly bad, and if congress shoots it down, which they bloody well should, it will make congress much more warry of such attempts by the FBI again.

They're not going to monitor everyone - just whoever they suspect are doing bad things. I doubt warezing is high on their list of priorities, so there's not a lot of panic there, and by the time the FBI decides to hop on that bandwagon there'll be every dog and his monkey with a way to keep "invisible". So, unless you're hobby is dealing illegal weapons and hijacking planes, you should be pretty safe from having big brother watch over your back. And doesn't the FBI already monitor certain things on the web? (ie, kiddy porn, etc...)

It would be used in the same manner as phone taps. With a warrant issued by a judge. Probable cause is a must. I see nothing wrong with this as it only affects those suspected of criminal activity.

I heard a apart of the patriot act allows phonetaps with out a judges aproval if under the suspicion of having anysort of ties with terorists

now if thats true or not I'm really not sure..

but even if thats not true, if you think about , if they install "easy to use back doors" in software (such has IM, email things such a outlook) How long do you think it will be before hackers find it and start reading your messages/emails for kicks..

but I guess I shouldn't care either way, sence I don't really use a IM, or email that much anyways..

They're talking about backdoors into ISPs' networks, not personal computer backdoors.

When you send an e-mail, or someone sends you one, it goes over SMTP. Unless you encrypt the message, it's sent over plain-text. SSH merely protects it as it travels from your mailserver to your computer.

Yes, the U.S.A.P.A.T.R.I.O.T. Act does allow law enforcement officials from the CIA, FBI, and NSA to circumvent getting a warrant for search and seizure. I don't have a copy of the act with me (in plain text, it's over 300kb), but it essentially allows any official that suspect terrorism to perform any searches, seizures, wiretaps, etc. Without even needing to inform anybody. I think that gives too much room for them, and would be particullarly harmful were a single agent to be a little too paranoid...

For the purpose of this post (since I haven't read the text of the act) I'll stipulate that you are correct in the searches. Okay, so are there any examples of a search taking place that infringed on anyone's rights? I haven't heard of one yet.

A total violation of the U.S. Constitution right there. This is why I condemn the Patriot Act.
