I've also heard on the news some other things:

-there has been shrapnel found from the explosion 10 away miles from it (that far?)

-there were estimates yesterday that there is a grand total of 3000 killed and wounded.

-after the explosion the North Korean people thought a nuclear war had started with the US.

-Kim Jong Il had passed through the site of the explosion 2 hours earlier

well i believe once some scientists setup enough explosives to equal the blast of a nuke without actually using a nuke... i think they did it to test how some equipment would hold up to the actual blast

Apparently they reckon a asteroid about 10km across(after going through the atmosphere) landed about in the West Indies 65 million years back at about 11km/s. There's a 180km diameter ring in the Gulf of Mexico called the Chicxulub structure they think is the impact crater left behind.

Some 20 billion years ago, a massive cosmic explosion forced all the matter in the universe outwards from one infinitesimally small point, in what was probably the most powerful explosion ever.

The Halifax harbor exsplosion was a big one... don't know if it was nuke size but it took out a good junk of Halifax.

What's there to debate? There's no proof for any argument in regards to the creation of the universe. It'd just be a flame war of trigger happy Christians proclaiming the greatness of their god and over-educated bookworms quoting Einstien. Throw in a Philosophy student or two, and we could have a circus.

LOL! I post an article about a horrific explosion and instead of talking about that, everyone discusses the incorrectness of the thread title. God that's funny. [http://forums.massassi.net/html/smile.gif]

And I assume GBK was talking about big bang being stupid. Atheists and agnostics feel the same way about creationism, so I guess everyone is even. [http://forums.massassi.net/html/smile.gif]

I have yet to find any estimates on what the power that last, but it doesn't sound too incredible.

Wasn't the Halifax incident the one involving a freighter loaded with explosives that accidentially colided with another? If that's the one you're talking about, it was more powerful than most atomic bombs.

I'll post comparisons of some explosives here, from lowest strength to highest:
  • Car bomb detonated outside Mosque in Iraq (last fall): 1 tonne
  • "Daisy Cutter" Bomb (Used in Iraq I and Afghanistan): 12 Kiltonnes (kt)
  • Massive Ordinance Air Blast (MOAB, in Iraq II): 14 kt
  • The "Little Boy" Bomb (Dropped on Hiroshima, 1945): 24 kt
  • The "Fat Man" Bomb (Dropped on Nagasaki, 1945): 27 kt
  • "Big Mike" (Worlds' first Hydrogen Bomb, 1952): 5.2 Megatonnes [mt]
  • "Tsarabomb" (Most powerful bomb ever built, shock wave encircled Earth 3 times): between 50-100 mt

I may have an error or two up there... I'll update it if I come back soon enough.

The "Tzar bomba" was detonated at 50mt, half it's potential yield.

Detonated on October 30th, 1961.

There was no clear indication of how powerful it was. The estimates were from a minimum of 50 mt, and less than 100 mt. I said 67 mt, as that was the most common figure I've seen.

I'll edit the post to show it as a ranged estimate.

No, after the collapse of the Soviet Union, the west had full access to the documentation. The Soviets state it was 50mt, and that had it been loaded completely with nuclear fuel, it would have been a 100mt...
