Why Goth?

I listen to The Cure.

No seriously... I HATE being lumped in with the common place morons one considers "goth."

I'll make just a few points.

A. Evanescence used to ROCK. They don't now.
B. Robert Smith > You
C. [http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v143/Prototelis/robertsmithismetal.jpg]
D. Slipknot sucks, a great deal.
E. See D.

Take a look at what me and a friend wrote here, hopefully this'll clear up some of the stereotypes.

EDIT: And just my point of view on it: Gothic is a lifestyle for those fascinated by all things dark, and especially by death. The gothic subculture tries to see beauty in them, often via poetic means. The essence within this, is that when one can appreciate the darker aspects of life, one can appreciate life itself even more.

So no, it's not about listening to HIM, writing angsty poems and trying to slash your wrists, nor is it about hating the world and feeling superior to it. Sadly, however, a lot of people nowadays do seem to think of the gothic subculture this way, especially thanks to artists like Valo and Manson. Which sucks.

If it wasn't, why would there be music genres called 'gothic rock' and 'gothic metal'?
2005-02-22, 12:43 PM #46
Goths might not necessarily have to listen to gothic music... I mean, it could be referring to the architecture.

Question is, how much weight does the issue of "gothics are weird" have past high school?

I find it sad that a group of people (No offense GothicX, we're pals, but I just can't agree with you here) can claim they're trying to feel set appart and different by labeling themselves with a word. A lifestyle is not who you are. You are not a goth. That's idiotic. You are a human being!

I'll quote myself and say:

"Not ALL [steriotypical vague generalized group title] like [vague and general music genre], I'm a [steriotypical vague generalized group title], and I don't like [vague general music genre]!"

I defeated the goths back in Age of Empires 2. It was so easy. The retards didn't even know how to put walls up. ;)

I'm annoyed with gothism because of all the idiots at my school that wear trench coats and chains and dye their hair black. People like to think that I'm gothic because I'm depressing and have natural black hair! OMG! It's so hard to conmprehend! . psh.
It took a while for you to find me; I was hiding in the lime tree.

Whats your favorite album?

Right now, I'm big into Wish and Kiss Me Kiss Me Kiss Me.

But I also like to rock Pornography, Faith, and Disintegration.

I think for a lot of people it is just an uncreative method of belonging and "standing out." It is a pretty tired image. But if it's something you like or are interested in or whatever, then whatever. I must say though, there are quite a few hot Gothic/Punk chicks that are, consequently, all the more hot.

Just maybe, it's a way of finding similar minded people. As well, you have to consider that there's also people that don't try to be gothic,. they're just being themselves, and it happens to fit the definition of gothic. Big deal.

It's not the lifestyle that determines it, it's your own thoughts and views on life that do. And that doesn't go for gothics, that goes for everyone in this whole damn world that's capable of thinking.

Sure, that's entirely possible. However, this doesn't mean that music and subcultures have nothing to do with eachother, because a lot of them affect eachother (hip-hop, metal, etcetera). It's not that you have to like it though, or that liking it makes you part of that subculture. That'd be absurd.

And yeah, the idea of 'being unique by being gothic' is utter bull****, and I think that's pretty clear too. By trying to live up to the standards of a subculture, you're essentially copying it, which is not the same as developing a style of your own.

And Hot Topic sucks.

Ok, JediKirby you just made a mistake.

Dictionary.com is not wrong, Goth means exactly what was stated. You however (not understanding a language I assume you speak meant the adjective.)

Gothic

Of or relating to the Goths or their language.
Germanic; Teutonic.
Of or relating to the Middle Ages; medieval.

Of or relating to an architectural style prevalent in western Europe from the 12th through the 15th century and characterized by pointed arches, rib vaulting, and a developing emphasis on verticality and the impression of height.
Of or relating to an architectural style derived from medieval Gothic.
Of or relating to painting, sculpture, or other art forms prevalent in northern Europe from the 12th through the 15th century.
often gothic Of or relating to a style of fiction that emphasizes the grotesque, mysterious, and desolate.
gothic Barbarous; crude

You are the weakest link, goodbye.

All your over posts were ok tho... :D

Searched Goth, not Gothic.

Anyway, GothicX, why do you want to put a name to who you are? Perhaps yeah, you find people who are similar to you, but to label your group as "the Gothic Group" is rediculous. There is no underground web of people who are goths. There is a generalized group of people in a school/society called goths. I have a group of friends who are all similar to me, we all wear golf-shorts because they're comfy and have a nice retro feel, we all play instruments, we all like heavy metal, as well as oldies and swing music. We don't label ourselves in order to stand out and show that we are all similar: We just freaking hang out. I don't understand the concept of putting a name to who you and your friends are. It seems silly, and it makes it seem that the group of people is trying to be a part of a great movement of a subculture. That's bull****. A 'subculture' is ravers. A 'subculture' is a nudist colloney. A subculture is NOT Goths, Preps, Punks, Losers, Geeks, etc. Those are steriotypical labels.

When people wear the same thing, and have similar backgrounds and music interests, they tend to get on. Heavy Metal bands generally wear black, their fans also usually enjoy wearing black, so heck, everyone loves wearing black and they all have similar interests. They just get labelled. The people would've been there before the label arrived. It's not such a big deal.

I would say punk is more of a subculture than ravers. Ravers just like dancing to electronic music, real punks have a particular set of beliefs alongside the common musical interest.

I wear a trench coat, but not to be 'gothy' or anything. I love my trenchcoat because it's warm, protects me from the elements, and I got it 70% off or something like that.

I do like how it looks, but it's not one of those "Stay the f&*$ away from me or I'll tie your nosehair to your bumhair and roll you into a washing machine" type looks.
