Chronicles of Riddick

I saw the movie Pitch Black a year or two ago on TV, I thoroughly liked it. I caught onto it kind of like I caught on to Stargate SG-1. It had been around awhile, and it was something that wasn't hte typical Sci-fi crap that youll find on alot of recent TV shows, like (IMO anyway, plz dont flame me) Andromeda (i saw like 1 episode), Battlestar Galactica (same), Star Trek Original Series Ripoffs, Star Trek Voyager/Enterprise, etc.

Anyway, I recently bought that movie, watched it about 4x in a few days for various reasons, I used to like it so much, it was all nostalgic for me to see it again, plus I tried to get my roommated into it.

Today, I found the Chronicles of Riddick for 15 bucks at Borders and Books. Lots of people told me it really really sucked. I realized... "it can't be any worse than Resident Evil: Apocalypse, which my roommate bought, so why not?"

I picked it up, and watched it.

ALl I have to say is...WOW. This movie was amazing. It reminds me of why I got into Star Trek: TNG. It was a progressive story with a good character that doesn't change. It had it's ups and downs, but in the end I was completely satisfied, only wanting more. Not only did it succeed in progressing the story and characters from the previous movie, but it implemented an entirely new story, with new mysteries, and new characters, and lots, and lots, of action, while maintaining the essence of what kept the character Riddick the same guy in the previous semi-small-time film "Pitch Black."

I find this movie is the Empire STrikes Back to Star wars. No one saw it coming, and when they saw it, it added so much...that everyone hated it, when it first came out. I'm only saying this because I heard ALOT of bad reviews of this movie.

I have to say, this had the originality and imagination I miss in modern movies. Not because it was the Return of the King of modern movies, but because in the midst of Return of the King, I can see this amazing sci-fi movie and stay hooked on such a great little surprise.

I'd give it a B to B+ rating.

your thoughts?

I thought it was good as well. Not as good as Pitch Black though, or course.

Is it the movie with that Van Diesel guy from tripple X? If it is, I liked it. It was pretty shallow, but nice to look at. Nothing special tough. Perhaps I just missed it's idea, or it's just that guy that I can't really stand. The movie was too "cool".

The whole series is great. The game is freaking awesome, but toooooooooo short. Made me sad when I beat it after 1 day of having it rented.

I thought it was pretty good. I really need to read the books though. Everyone has been saying they're really good...

I actually liked it, except for the ending.

It had its moments. It certainly was no Pitch Black though. I did like the whole concept of the prison planet.

I liked it, Vin Diesel sucks at acting though.

I liked Equilibrium. It definately wasnt deserve of comparisons to The Matrix, but it was still an enjoyable movie... (except for that cop-out of an end)

I enjoyed CoR and loved Equilibrium. What was the point in dissing SAJN just because he liked Equilibrium? Geesh.

What do you have against Tornberry? I mean seriously, I dissed him too, why defend only SAJN?

/sarcasm.

No I was jsut messing with them. What I said was only my opinion. I wasn't dissing him, I was disagreeing with them both.

Tornberry was inferring that Equilibrium was bad. I disagree. SAJN was inferring CoR was bad. I disagree. That's all.

I thought it was great. Better than Pitch Black. I'd love to see more of Riddick.

I like Pitch Black, and really liked Escape from Butcher Bay, but I thought The Chronicles of Riddick was quite crap, unfortunately the director's cut (which is apparently a million times better) isn't available in this country.

Although to be honest, one of my biggest problems with this film was the visual design. For example, they tried far too hard to make the Necromonger armour look cool (bogging it down with too much detail, making it look less functional and more like fancy dress). They looked like a bunch of ponces, I couldn't take them seriously.

I haven't seen the theatre version, I bought the directors cut. I"m interesting in seeing how "bad" it was without the extra scenes. Personally, what i saw, was very awesome.

They included this unexplained mysterious character (even after Dir. cut) I know, that wasn't in the theatres, some kind of girl that is like a part of the "faith" that everyone talks about, who helps Riddick out in some wierd way.

I'm going to have to see if this disk includes the original theatre version.

any idea whether the directors cut will ever make it to the UK? I quite liked chronicles but not as much as pitch black...

reading through whats different on the directors cut it sounds as though it could improve the film further....

I only saw the Directors Cut. What different in the original?

Also, Directors Cuts are becoming used as marketing tools way too much. In the beginning of the directors cut, the Director comes on screen to say that much of the special effects for the added scenes havent been finished. To me it seems like they just slapped something together, released it as a directors cut 2 weeks after the original dvd came out, so that people would end up buying 2 dvds instead of one. I've been seeing this happen with other movies as well.

I just watched the beginning a little while ago to see if I could find a theatrical cut...the director doesn't say the special effects aren't finished, he says that the scenes weren't added in until this directors cut, and they had to use special effects to make a smoother transition... something like that.

I usually like movies with a strong plot and idea. Even if the idea is not that bright but if it's followed forcefully, a movie usually works. Chronicles had also a very nice, different world and environment. It certainly had its weaknesses, and Riddick wasn't a badass enough. But it was an OK movie, and I didn't consider my money wasted (DVD rent...).
