I thought this was hilarious...

Hope it wasn't posted before.

http://www.bbspot.com/News/2005/01/microsoft_antispyware.html

If you don't feel like clicking the link:

Quote:
Many Microsoft Windows users who downloaded the recently released AntiSpyware program from Microsoft, or had it installed through an automatic Windows update, woke up to a surprise. Unintentionally, the heuristics of the software detected Internet Explorer as spyware, and removed the program from their systems.

[EDIT]

LOL I missed the last part...

Quote:
Symantec Antivirus Research reported that virus sightings were down by 95% this morning.

That's hilarious!

How do you remove IE without screwing up Windows? Doesn't IE handle all the folder GUIs?

Anyway... yeah. Whatever happened to QA?

Nope, you can remove IE without any problems, besides not being able to view a few sites, etc.

No, you really can't. You may think you have, but pull up any regular windows folder explorer window, and type in www.google.com then hit enter.

I like it... but how difficult is it to use? Do you have to know the ins and outs, or can you just say "No IE, None of the stupid crap you think I need like AOL suggestions, MSN folders, Quicken, Money2000, etc"

Yes, you can remove IE. Yoshi's example is Windows Explorer (explorer.exe), which is a different program than IE (iexplore.exe). You can "emulate" IE by using windows explorer to view sites. But it's still windows explorer.

Past that, (windows) explorer sucks anyways. Litestep is a superior shell.

Clicky button makey stuff go bye bye. It's VERY easy to use. I learned the ins and outs in about 30 seconds.

Can I run it on a seperate partition on my slave just to check it out, in case I mess anything up?

Which reminds me, can I just run XP off of my tiny slave? It'd probably free up a lot of space on the bigger HD.

I've been trying for years to get rid of Internet Explorer. I never imagined that Microsoft would do it for me. I'm ecstatic.
HAHA!

I'm not really an IE person anymore; I've moved to Firefox (love tabbed browsing and the Nuke Anything extension I d/led today). Now I just use IE to view the few pages that don't work in FF, or if I have a windows folder open and need the internet in a hurry.
May the mass times acceleration be with you.

I'm not sure if you already played with the program, but you only need your XP disk. The program doesn't actually fiddle with your current installation, instead you copy your Windows disk to a folder then use the program to open that folder. Then, it lets you configure everything and makes a completely bootable normal Windows disk .ISO out of whats left. I've taken my XP disk from 600MBs+ down to around 200 something.

As long as theres enough room (excluding the swapfile, which is better on a separate partition/drive so it doesn't fragment.) XP should install fine, even better if you use nLite to make the installation even smaller.

They probably share the same components. COM or something maybe? Not too familiar with that stuff. I think it's the same way IE based browsers work. You can remove iexplore.exe and its associated files with a program or by removing it when slipstreaming an install CD, but the components will still be there. IE is still there, just on a lower level.

It works the other way too. Try going to c:\ in IE.

OMG! The computer kills the user!
