Top 50 Most Important Games

From [H]ardOCP, pretty much sums up my thoughts:

While we are on the subject of games, 1UP.com has a list of the 50 most essential games. The list includes Pong (2), Pac Man (10), Doom (26), Half-Life (42) and Halo (50). Oddly enough, Daikatana didn’t make the list...what’s up with that? I demand a recount! Thanks to Blair for the linkage…except Daikatana, you can blame me for that.

Wha?

I know the history around that certain game, but is it really an "essential" game?

Who says their list is anywhere near accurate? It's going to vary from person to person.

Where's Quake II? I thought the game was pretty good for its time.

I, personally, think it's about 50% influential games, 50% popular games.

A lot of those one there are fairly accurate in their position...and a lot of them shouldn't make the list.

Oh do I have a lot to complain about:

Halo? REVOLUNTIONARY? Sorry, it's just another damn FPS, with a slipshod sci-fi storyline and unremarkable graphics. There was absolutely nothing special about it.

Doom? What the hell? Wolf3d definately deserved the innovation! Doom was simply a spiffed up version of it!

Since freakin when is Macintosh a GAME?! HELLO?!

ET? Are they high?

And to make them hypocrits: They give spacewar, which was basically the predecessor of Asteroids, the #1. But Asteroids was a more spiffed up and MUCH more popular game! Why didn't it get the spot instead! I mean, Doom got the spot! Why not Asteroids?

Deus Ex: Quite possibly the biggest mess up on their part ever.

Tecmo Bowl > Madden. Sorry, that's just the way it is.

And a lot more. There's tons of hypocripsy in their articles too, its hilarious to read.

#22 - the macintosh

excuse me while I puke...
and last I checked the mac isnt a game, nor does it even play games well. This is why imbreds should be refused education and forced into slave labor...(or maybe just restricted from writing web content...like pop-ups)

As said by many, where the f*** is Deus Ex?

Also, they forgot to add JK . . . and UT2k4 (ONSLAUGHT > * for MP)

Most of those games are only known to people who have to be at least in their 30s and play games every single day on any console or primitive computer they can get their hands on. Who heard of games from 1962?
2005-02-22, 8:39 PM #21
OBVIOUSLY none of you are reading what these people have to say about their list.
2005-02-22, 11:26 PM #22
The list itself is very insignificant. I'll rather make up my own.

So the reason Halo is one of the most important games is that it brought non-gamers into gaming (a little) and it gave Microsoft a chance in the console market?

Mm. I'm not so sure...

I can kind of see their reasoning by putting ET on the list (though they do seem to think who is making the games is extremely important, as can be seen with both ET and Halo.)

Why is one of the original Quake's not on there, or Mechwarrior or something. The introduction of full 3D is hugely important!

Also, WHERE IS DEUS EX!

That game was not only ahead of its time, but it's ahead of our time now! (Including its sequel a little  )

Its on the list because it was the first computer to use a mouse. Imagine playing games without a mouse now?

Halo brought a lot of gamers into the mainstream market. I mean, think about how many people who otherwise wouldn't game, but play halo nonstop.

ET...well...read their reasoning...

Doom got the nod because it was the first to use an online Deathmatch. Like I said, read their reasoning. It makes sense if you read it.

There are a few I don't agree with, but for the most part...I agree with what they say.

DN3D wasn't really revolutionary. Just awesome.

System Shock was, but maybe not enough to make top 50.

Trust me, their list is fairly solid.

I think a lot of you are forgetting this is a list of the 50 most important games, not the 50 best games.

Yes, Deus Ex and System Shock are excellent games, but what significance have they really had on computer gaming as a whole? Both skirt just above obscurity.

Similarly with Wolfenstein 3D, yes it was the first of its kind, but it took Doom to really make an impact on the scene. Everything about Doom was miles ahead of Wolf3D, and Doom became icon of 90s computer gaming.

The only question mark I'd pose is Parappa the Rapper. I mean, really.

Deus Ex was one of those games that combined FPS and RPG. That, and it was awesome.

Where is Age Of Empires? That was one of the best RTS's ever. :(
2005-02-23, 9:16 AM #38
And for those who didn't READ CAREFULLY, it's in approximate CHRONOLOGICAL order, because it would be very hard to rank them otherwise.

Apart from the lack of DX (which doesn't really have any 'sons' so to speak - so maybe that's why it's been missed out) it's a very solid list, and the articles that justify the choices are good too.
