blades vs machines

How many of you prefer shaving with blades over mechanical shavers?

i'm a blade man myself, I swear by mach 3. I also use Ivory -brand hand soap as shaving cream b/c foam irritates the hell out of my skin. Using soap is beneficial-- it lets me shave and wash my face at the same time.

I used to use a machine, but I switched to blades when it became dull and began cutting me. My current blade is teh uberblade: I've been using it for 3 months now and it hasn't dulled at all. Bloody amazing.

I have a Mach3, but I'm too lazy to buy blades for it, so I've been using my dad's crappy BIC disposable razors. Those things are so freakin' bad, if you saw me you'd know I don't get thick beards at all, but I still have to go over rough patches like 999 times with the BIC.

I have a Norelco razor that's pretty damned nice. But my M3 Power rocks. :D

I use the Mach 3, although I've been wanting to try out an electric.

Maybe I'll give the Mach 3 Power a whirl.

Used to use blades, now I just don't shave anymore! :D

Say I wanted to get a not-so-close shave, what kind of razor should I use? I really really hate it when my skin is all smooth after shaving (yeah I'm weird). I'd rather have a 5 o'clock shadow all the time. I just love it when my skin feels like sandpaper, and I can cut my fingers just from scratching it. :p

For that just use a beard trimmer without any attachment on it. Gets rid of the crap and leaves a nice stubble behind. :p

well..I have no beard to shave, but I usually shave my legs with a cheap hand razor (because I'm too poor to afford a good one)

I've been using the same Mach 3 Turbo blade for the past 3 or 4 months now. Used to replace them as soon as the blue thingo started to fade, but this one is completely white and it still shaves like it did out of the box. It's a scam I tells ya!

I have a cheap electric if only because it's faster. If I have time I'll go over hard to reach spots with a blade.
2005-02-24, 8:53 PM #15
My skin is pretty sensitive, and the hair under my chin and around my neck has a mind of its own. It likes to go all around in different directions and is quite difficult to cut. So electric is the only way.

Here's a thing to remember with electric. They aren't really worth it until you invest a good $50 in a nice Braun or Remington, Braun generally being better. Norelco is garbage. Rotary shaves are a gimmick, they absolutely suck. They're a lot slower and irritate your skin more due to the fact that you have to rub it around in circles about nine times just to make a single cut. The only thing it has going for it is that it catches more hair in its compartment that the oscillating type Braun and Remington use. That's probably because the blade oscillates back and forth so unbelievable fast that most of the hair is turned into dust and sucked out of your bathroom by the exhaust. The oscillating blade of death is also quite a bit closer. Believe me, I have both and have used both extensively. Norelco's rotary shavers are garbage.

I have a nice Remington rotary shaver that I got for Christmas several years ago that I use. Still using the original blades too. It leaves behind some stubble, but that doesn't bother me.

However, if I'm going out or want to look nice, I'll take the time to shave properly with a Mach 3.

Mach 3 every other morning, with shave gel. However, I also have a straight razor and a cake of shaving soap (with brush) that I use when I am feeling manly.

Mach 3 Turbo here. I used to think 3 blades was excessive and it took me a while to get used to the flexible head, but now I swear by it.

Unfortunately I tend to dull the blades too fast. I have really thick facial hair, so in order to get a face that doesn't have the same texture as sandpaper I need to go over it 3 times.
2005-02-24, 9:27 PM #20
My shaving pattern is more or less don't shave for a week then trim it with the sideburn trimmer on and electric. However, I've been using a razor (Sensor Excell) more lately so as to have a nice smooth face when I got out with my GF.

I shave every sunday, and trim my sideburns once a month.
I use a mach 3

Imagine my dissapointment when I clicked on this thread and discovered that it was not, in fact, about ninjas fighting robots. :(

I use cheap bic razors and water. No gel or anything. Someday I want to try a straight razor or a big knife, just to say I've done it.

Flexor, I use to do the exact same thing! Wanting the 5 o'clock shadow and all. Using the same method Shintock suggested, I use to just rub it down to stubble with a beard trimmer. It was pretty easy, if perhaps rough. I might go back to doing it more often again.

For now though, I just shave about once a week. I should shave more, but I'm lazy. I use a Mach 3 because they sent like 3 of them with a bajillion refills on my 18th birthday or something. It seems to work well enough, but with my long hair, I really have to shave in the shower now. That, and my facial hair grows in funny directions.

I swear by my mach 3 turbo: but you guys who only change the head every few months are BAD BAD MEN AND I DON'T LIKE YOU BECAUSE I CAN'T AND THOSE BLADES ARE EXPENSIVE

But yeah, the Gillette red trimmed shaving gel can, and a blue handle on my razor too!
2005-02-25, 4:15 AM #27
If I want to get rid of horrible facial hair to go out, I shave mine with my electric razor's sideburn trimmer. If I'm not going to be seen by anyone for a day or 4, I use my gilette sensor excel. I just can't stand my face to be that bald. Self conscious, I guess. I usually try to keep some hair on my chin, if only to hide my deformed chin. That and it's the only place that grows in thick enough.

I've got a nice cheap Brawn leccy shaver, but it's a bit difficult at some angles. I prefer it over the BIC disposables, though.

The man speaks truth. I have one of those, they do irritate. Hopefully I have a paycheck and I can get a new shaver. I don't use blades because quite frankly, I'm not steady with my hands. Many lacerations have demonstrated this fact.

Mach 3 Turbo, it kicks arse, gets my face as bald as a babys arse, i dont like electric razors at all.
2005-02-25, 11:09 AM #34
I think a good hand shaver is more effective than an electric shaver, but is at least twice as slow. Thus I most often use the electric shaver. If I want to get a really close shave, I'll do a quick pass with the electric, and then use the hand shaver.

I have a Mach3 Power.

I don't shave really close though. If I shave against the growth of my hair, I get mad razor bumps.

I've got a Braun dual head that I got for around $50 or $60 at Walmart, I think it was a few dollars off. Although Remington may have triple heads of similar price, the Brauns are probably better. It really is some high quality German engineering. But yeah, basically a standard dualie with a washable head, which is incredibly useful. You can pop the foil off, run it under water with it turned on even. Do that twice, once after rotating the cutting head, and the water cleans it out completely. And then you can wash the foil with a little handsoap (like build up a lather then just rub the foil around a bit, or dunk it in Listerine for a while). You don't have to go that far, but I do it every time I shave. Because of my acne, it's not a good idea to keep using the same foil over and over without having it sanitized. Plus it just tends to have less friction when it's cleaner.

Is it a gimmick? Do you feel goosebumps when you bring it close to your face? How about with a thick lather of soap or shaving cream?

so many mach 3's, i can go one better - a quattro
nope.

The Mach 3 power is the greatest shaving system, period.

I'm not one to be forceful, but any other opinion is just wrong. There's just no two ways about it.

[edit] oh and Emon, it vibrates, but there's no goosebumps. the system is supposed to make close hairs stand on end, but I think the vibration does that, and not an actual current. It means you can pretty much always shave against the grain from stroke one, two tops, and feel no pain or pinch, except the chin which I usually down-stroke first.

You could get the same quality shave from other blades, but this one gets it done quick and painless.

Me too . . . that's why about 1/2 the time I go without shaving. then there's the ~4 months out of the year that i try to be completel clean shaved, but I think that i look like i'm twelve when that happens, instead of the bearded look which make me look ~25
