That "dithering" is just texture, something real world objects have a lot more of than objects in video games.

Thats crappy JPG compression.

Photoshop does a much better job without doing that crap.

Photoshop also produces huge Jpeg files.

You know there is a detail slider in photoshop. It's a tradeoff between quality and size.

This, however, is usually irrelevent, as most cameras use jpeg compression internally. This is most unfortunate; they do this so they can sell a camera that holds x number of pictures. It would be ideal to use a lossless format, such as PNG, instead of a lossy method like JPEG.

I suppose that a typical customer just wants to e-mail their photos to their friends, on the other hand.

I'm interested to know what the shiny silver thing with green lights is.

Is it an infra-red mouse port by any chance?

png isn't lossless. it just uses a different method of compression. jpeg uses patterns in noise and texture to produce a smaller image, png uses areas of solid colour. As a result, jpeg is ideal for photos and png is ideal for webgraphics (since webgraphics tend to be more cartoony).

Yeah, a lossless method

png in it's basic format is lossless, but it's almost useless unless you perform some palette optimizations because it produces files twice as large as a jpeg with the lowest compression settings.

On a quick test I did on a webcam image (it captures in bmp not jpeg) I got the following results.

BMP: 900kb
JPEG (compression level 1 - minimum): 70kb
JPEG (compression level 10): 25kb
*JPEG (compression level 99 - maximum): 2.5kb - looks like crap [http://forums.massassi.net/html/tongue.gif]
PNG (highest possible quality, full pallete) - 176kb
*PNG (256 colour pallete) - 114kb

Now for a test on a webgraphic-style cartoon image:

BMP - 223kb
JPEG (compression level 1 - minimum) - 33.6kb
JPEG (compression level 10 - 16.5kb
*JPEG (compression level 99 - maximum) - 1.24kb
PNG (highest possible quality, full pallete) - 39kb
PNG (256 colour pallete) - 20.9kb

* indicates a test resulting in visible artifacts

Actually, it seems png just sucks [http://forums.massassi.net/html/tongue.gif] However from past experience with png, i've managed to get good results out of png for website designs, but jpeg is always the format of choice for photos.

The point i'm making is that png can't guarantee smaller file sizes on all images, the quality of compression varies greatly depending on the subject of the image. I always tend to use JPEG compression 10 for photos and the like and it saves a lot of space. As a result, it's pretty obvious why jpeg is used (instead of something like png) for digital cameras where filesize is an important consideration.

Camera manufacturers need to be able to guarantee that a camera with Xmb of memory can always hold Y photos.

Close, wireless mouse/keyboard base station. Doesn't work on infrared though. It's also a cradle to hold and recharge the mouse so you don't have to replace the batteries in it. [http://forums.massassi.net/html/smile.gif]
