So my Ubuntu Cds came....

...and I'm not sure what I should do with 20 ubuntu cds. I used one to install Ubuntu (I'm using it now... very nice). Since the ubuntu site claimed that it cost the same to mail about 20 cds as it did to mauil one, I decided to get 20.

I have about 20 X86-architecture cds and 2 ppc cds (for my art professor, who is something of a mac fanatic. I plan to give a pcc set to him in case he wants to experiment with it on an old g3 or something.)

Ubuntu is a very nice system ,and if I have this figured out correctly, it's APT based, so I can use APT-GET to get stuff, right? How do I use APT-get? (I'm interested in getting KDE, Xine, and XMMS, just to name a few)

not for linux, no. Ubuntu deserves better than that.

For filthy AOL cds, by all means.

You want XMMS? `apt-get install xmms;`

You want KDE? `apt-get install kde;`

You got sick of KDE, and no longer need it? `apt-get remove kde;`

apt is great. :D
And when the moment is right, I'm gonna fly a kite.

I already have a problem:

Code:
E: Could not open lock file /var/lib/dpkg/lock - open (13 Permission denied)
E: Unable to lock the administration directory (/var/lib/dpkg/), are you root?

What does this mean? You have to type this into a terminal window, right? (That's what i did)

I got this when I tried

apt-get install xmms

Yeah, go to a terminal window, type su and then put in your root password. Then try apt.

I was able to get xmms installed by running apt-get via su.

Now, where is it? Where do these things get installed?

also, when I tried apt-get install kde , I got this:

Code:
Package kde is not available, but is referred to by another package.
This may mean that the package is missing, has been obsoleted, or
is only available from another source
E: Package kde has no installation candidate

did that already.

Now what?
I still don't know where my xmms is. it installed, but I'm not sure where. the search feature only lets me search a folder instead of a whole partition.

Run `whereis APPNAME;` to find out where its installed, but thats not neccessary. Just open up an xterm and run `xmms &;`

That means that the kde package isnt called "kde" in Ubuntuu. Run `apt-cache search kde;` to find the proper package.

GBK's right. In Ubuntu, open up /etc/sources.list, and you'll have two lines commented out with server addresses. Uncomment them, and KDE should be available for you.
2005-02-25, 10:19 PM #19
1. Format Ubuntu
2. emerge system
3. emerge world
4. emerge kde
5. ???
6. Profit!

Sorry, couldn't resist :D

Damn, linux really is confusing. I'm starting to appreciate that my computer was doing me a favour by not allowing me to install it.

Also, if you want more up to date stuff, or a larger selection, make sure to add the universe and multiverse hoary sources to your sources.lst file. Sometimes stuff breaks, like it did in mine, but you should be able to get it to work again.

Right now I have the problem that I can't edit my gnome menu and whenever I make drawers out of menus and open them, a bunch of error messages pop up saying that the icon files couldn't be found, however, this only happens the first time I open the drawer. And the icons are quite clearly there. Also, ubuntu no longer knows that I have gdm startup and logoff sounds, even though they are in the directories specified, and the files exist and play via any media player just fine. One day I will figure this out. Until then....yeah.
