I'm confused. I've been hearing "no late fees!" ads and announcements from Blockbuster. But I'm a bit hesitant about returning my DVD videos late. Is there a hidden fee or some small-print policy that will screw me over in their new "campaign" for customers? Maybe I should just order videos online or something.

Where do you get your movie rentals?

Movies are still due back when they're due. Technically.

But you have 7 days after that to bring it back without any penalties. After that the price of the movie (minus what you paid to rent it) is added to your account. Then you have 30 days to bring it back for your money, but that costs you a $1.75 CAD restocking fee (probably $1.50 in the states).

Seriously though, just rent the movie when you feel like watching something and return it when you're done with it. Blockbuster stores have a limited stock and it's pretty asinine to deprive other people of the movie they came in to rent just because you're lazy.

Under the terms of the new policy, consumers get a weeklong grace period to return movies or games after their due dates. But their accounts are automatically charged the full retail price of the title (minus the initial rental fee) if they keep the item for more than a month. If consumers return the title within 30 days after the grace period, they are charged a restocking fee of $1.25.

Apparently they might get sued for not calling the 'restocking' fee a late fee.

I doubt it. They would probably claim that you had purchased the film, not rented it, and returning the film after purchasing it (the point where your account is debited for the film) you are really just returning it.

I wonder if the policy is valid for games? I'd much rather have a game for double the time (two weeks) than having a movie for so long.

Hollywood Video. They have this great program that I plan on signing up for soon, called the MVP Program. For 15 bucks a month, you get unlimited free rentals of every movie in the store that isnt a new release (ie, came out more than 2 weeks ago). It's a great program, and its even only 10 bucks a month for the first 3 months.

Indian movie rentals are great!

First they take out their small sleeve of DVDs and you can look through those, which are the new ones. THen, if you don't find what you're looking for, you ask to see more and they go around back and haul out the big box of DVDs and you rent.

Then, if you're late, they send a guy to your house to remind you that it's late!

i have that movie pass with unlimited rentals (2 at a time but u can go back as many times as u want a day) it's $26 a month. it's worth it, since i'm not spending $2 for a "boring" movie, and i can rent the ones that i'm not so sure about without wasting money. just wasting time....so if i don't care for the movie halfway through i can just pop it out of the dvd player and not think 'o i wasted my $2-$4....'

I get mine at United Video, which is a small-time place located at the intersection of Del Amo and Bellflower in Lakewood, CA.

They have a decent inventory, and their one-day DVD rentals are $1.50, which is very reasonable, and a one-day vhs rental is 50 cents.

We're still debating whether or not we're actually going to raise the price to 14.99 at hollywood after 90 days. The 9.99 price is so popular it may turn out that we keep it at that. I know they're testing the 14.99 price in certain stores, as well as variations of the program of which I do not know the specifics.

I get all my DVDs from the library. They get everything sooner or later. I'm content to wait.

When I'm at school I rent from Blockbuster because my friend has an account there and just random gave me a card to use there. When I'm at home I rent them from Video Shack...just a local place. (Think it costs a dollar to rent movies after they've been released for a month or two.) I've never really had trouble with late fees because I'm one of those crazy people that returns the movie right after I watch it (or at least that night sometime.)

Video East and West, a local video store. They have a pretty good deal, 7 movies for 7 days for 7 bucks. Best deal around here, anyways.

It was sorta already like that for the blockbuster by my house. I would always bring in late movies and the old Romanian guy that worked there would tell me it was okay and not charge me late fees.

Too bad that store closed.

Be careful! Blockbuster's new policy is void in some states! Do some research before you decide to hand them in late.

Really? So the company decides different policies for different states?

More like the different states decide (by making laws) the policies that may or may not be used in those states.

That would be awesome. (If they did it at my local Hollywood Video)
